There is no way anyone who buys Apple could be surprised by this. Apple has never been about getting the most for your money. Apple has always been about image. Just read the threads in any Apple forum. People here compare Apple to that of Luxury items like exotic cars while thinking every other device is a Ford. Completely delusional. Apple's biggest strength is the brand image they hold amongst shoppers, especially it's most loyal of followers (aka iSheep). These iSheep are the ones who will buy an Apple product over anything regardless of anything. If the iPhone 4 stayed exactly as is for 5yrs, there is no doubt in my mind, the people who believe Apple is the equivalent of an "exotic car" will still buy that iPhone. These people would even take an iphone 3 (if it were the only Apple phone available) over any current non Apple device. Because they honestly believe an iPhone 3 offers more in every way. I have a 3GS and I of course know it is just not the case. As I said, delusional.
Yeah, and there are people who will never buy Apple because they hate all things Apple. So what's your fscking point? Go buy a Playbook or Xoom while you're at it. Stockholm Syndrome.

Exactly, so many iSheep its not even funny. There is the EVO 3D due out next month with clearly far superior specs and better OS, Sense 3.0 UI is amazing, but the iSheep won't dare look at something without the fruit logo.

I'm sorry, but you lose all credibility when you use made up words like "iSheep". Could you explain for me and the others why the OS is superior? You're also comparing a phone that comes out next month to a phone that was released 11 months ago, with an OS that is 11 months old.

You guys bitter much?
Has it ever occurred to you that what you need/want out of a smartphone may be different from what some one else needs/wants and what you like may be something they either are apathetic about to downright don't want and therefore your phone of choice isn't going to be so great for them?
And as for user interface, some of that is very subjective. What you may like I may absolutely hate and vice versa.
For example, I'll tell you why I haven't looked at Android seriously except out of idle curiousity.
1. I am perfectly happy with my phone. The only thing Apple can change is usually stuff they do change with each phone (faster processor, more storage though I will admit I was disappointed in that aspect with the 4).
2. The app market is still better on iOS. That may change. But at this point unless iOS starts getting really left behind, I probably won't change cause of reason #3.
3. When I got my iphone there wasn't anything near as good on AT&T (and I preferred to stick with them believe it or not). Blackberry sux, the windows phones I saw had keyboards with such tiny little keys that even with my small fingers the iphone's touch keyboard was still better (believe me, I actually was avoiding the iphone when I was first looking at that point, I was bah humbugging Apple making a phone). Why is this relevant? Cause I've had the iphone in one variation or another since 3 years ago and I've accumulated a lot of apps for it (plus I've accumulated a lot of DRM'ed itunes and it's nice to be able to use my iphone as an ipod). At this point changing to a new system would be painful as I"d have to start over on accumulating apps. And don't tell me I should have picked a better phone then, there really was no good competition (I honestly was looking for half a year after my upgrade expired to find something to justify an upgrade).
Apple at this point would have to ruin the iphone some how (get so far behind the developers all mostly leave or ruin the form factor enough to piss me off) as well as me needing a new phone (either broken or so old technology it runs apps horribley or no one supports it anymore) for me to change. Android could have a better phone, I don't care. I'm very happy with the iphone so I have no motivation to leave as I don't need the extras Android provides and I'd lose a lot by leaving.
So yes, for me part of it is that Apple got to me first and got me locked in their ecosystem. But a big reason today I might pick the iphone still is that it still appeals to the developers. Enough so that for example Squaresoft releases its smartphone offerings to iphone first. That to me is far more important than widgets or moving backgrounds or even random extras they might throw on the Android (and I don't want a larger screen, to me that is actually a negative). The camera is good enough on the iphone 4, the GPS is excellent, the app market is well supported (most important), the phone runs smoothly even if it may not have the fastest processor. So I might still pick it even without being locked into the ecosystem.

In my opinion, there is just about a zero percent chance the new phone is called the iPhone 4S for one simple reason: Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs likes things his way, and there is no way in hell he is going to name it something like 4S, when people have suggested 4S for months. He could get away with the iPad 2 because there is nothing special about adding 2 to the iPad name to signify it is the 2nd iPad.
The article says that this will be an HSPA+ phone. So does that mean AT&T and T-Mobile users will be enjoying the fake "4G" while Sprint and Verizon customers will be stuck on 3G? Even though it's fake "4G," it's still a hell of a lot faster than 3G. I would be pissed as a Verizon customer.

What's wrong with a made up word like iSheep. The "i" denotes Apple. The "sheep" denotes people with a flocking dynamic that are very easily led. It's very fitting to a lot of the people who know nothing outside of the Apple world. People who think they hold in their hands, products that others don't buy simply because they can't afford it. Funny how you see so many kids with these so called "expensive, out of reach" luxury devices.
You want to hang on some made up stupid words. Here's a few: "Retina Display"

Already? Revamping a phone model after 15 months on the market is 'already'? What planet do you live on?
4S is the upgrade. No need to go to 5 already. Remember 3G -> 3GS?????

Maybe in the US, 4G is the new hit....
when I left college there back in 2009, 3G only started to bloom (hence I got the iPhone 3G in October 2008)
But in terms of overseas, especially Hong Kong, where we have more phone choices than the US (except for smartphones, we don't have a lot of HTC choices here), 4G hasn't even been announced yet to take over our networks.
We are still heavily using 3G and 3.5G, and i STILL don't see 4G coming around the corner this year.
I'm not sure about elsewhere outside Hong Kong though.

Well, retina is a word and so is display, so I don't really understand your point there.
When someone uses a made up word like "iSheep" it adds nothing to their argument. What you're really saying is "I can't fathom how someone could like something that I don't like. I don't want to bother finding out why they like what they like. So, I'm just going to call them stupid."

Completely agree. Even my iPhone 3GS runs everything perfectly fine. I would like to have a speed upgrade because it would decrease loading times, but it's not like the 3GS is by any means slow. I honestly am fine with 32GB as well. Would I get the 64GB model if they made it? Sure, but I'm not hurting because I only have 32GB of storage. I understand some people have thousands and thousands of songs so they require the additional storage; I don't. And I doubt most people do either.
And on your second point, you couldn't be more right. the iOS App Store blows Android's out of the water. There are any, many more exclusive games for iOS and the shared apps in general are better on the iOS platform. BREAKING NEWS: Android has reached 200,000 apps! In related news, Android has reached 100,000 ring tones on the Android Market!!!!!
Android people talk about iSheep, yet they are as big of sheep in the whole game as Apple users. They listen to the complete ******** about how they need better specs and need this and need this. For example, enjoy that NFC capability Nexus users. Yeah, you know, that feature that you won't even use once during your time owning the phone. I'm not saying Apple and Apple users are perfect, but Android is far from perfect.

Actually It's my observation that most people don't hate Apple. They hate the iSheep who go on and ridicule anything that is not Apple. Don't get me wrong Android have their fair share of droidSheep (another new word) as well. The only difference, in my humble opinion, is the Android crowd seem more demanding of their hardware. And are not hesitant to be hard on their Android manufacturer of choice. They are fully aware how good the Android OS is. While the Apple crowd truly seem to enjoy the subjective side of things like, it just "feels" smoother. And will take whatever Apple dishes out. Just read this Forum. Majority of the posters just seem to say, oh well, I'll just wait. Or they make comments about Apple products that are on the fence. That way, when Apple chooses to go one way or the other, they won't look like they're in disagreement with Apple's direction. Look how many have already said they are fine with the iPad 2's resolution and it's no real big deal that it doesn't have retina display. Or no 4G on the next iphone is just fine with them. Seriously now. I't quite pathetic. This is why the term "iSheep" is so fitting.

I already gave Android a look. I returned the Inspire 4G within a week. The Android Market sucks. Period. I have my phone for four main purposes: Phone calls, Text messages, Web Browsing/Email, Apps. Every smart phone does the first three adequately enough. Android couldn't even hold the jock strap of iOS for the fourth purpose. Is it nice to have the weather on my lock screen? Sure, but I could easily live without it. I couldn't live without the many apps I use on a daily basis that Android simply doesn't provide. And if Android did provide it, it provided it with annoying, and often intrusive ads.
As I said earlier: 200,000 apps, 100,000 ring tones.

Good luck with that half a day battery. Had a droid, no thank you! I did all possible things to prolong battery life but that thing was a hog. HTC Desire (MT4G), the only thing that thing desired was more batteries.

Here's the thing, it's Apple. I find overall I'm happy with their products. Do they do everything I want? No, for one I'd love to have the option for a 13" MBP that has a dedicated graphics card or even a faster processor (Just cause I want a small size doesn't mean I want a low powered laptop, I have a monitor for when I have space and want a large screen).
But, in the end, their products that I've bought are what makes me happiest so I do compromise. But, it's Apple, they aren't going to do what the users say they want. They are controlling and do what they feel makes a good device, not what popular demand says, and if you can't accept that, you'll be happier with another device (no one is forcing you to buy them, in the end you gotta figure out if what they offer is what you want to pay for). They are going to do what they feel the users really want/need. I find that overall they are pretty good at figuring out what is actually important in usability in a product (not always but I have rarely been unhappy with the usefulness of their product.... quality on the other hand? I think Apple has gone downhill :( ).
For example before I had an iphone I had an ipaq (Dedicated PDA). I groused about the idea of a phone/PDA combo, I thought they should be seperate. I didn't want a huge screen for a phone to put to my head but I didn't want a small screen for my PDA (which was a big reason I was against the idea of a combo, it made the screen smaller but you still had this brick to hold to your ear). I made fun of iphone's small screen compared to my ipaq. I made fun of the lack of a SD card slot (or any sort of removable storage). I made fun of the non removable battery. I made fun of the touchscreen keyboard. I made fun of the fact that you couldn't install any new programs (this was the first iphone).
After getting the phone the smaller screen was unnoticeable in using it as a PDA but the small size made it fine for a phone, not unwieldy like I'd imagine holding a PDA to your ear might feel. I now prefer having more storage in the device and not having to switch around SD cards, it's nice everything fits in one place. The battery? Well I guess it does make the device more durable to not have it removable (that's the one thing that went flakey on my PDA, the battery door stopped latching so well) but still be nice to have the option. But you still can buy external batteries that will power the iphone. So a little clunkier answer than having a removable battery that you can replace, but you aren't just limited to that battery. When I went to look at different smartphones, at first only considering ones with keyboards, I discovered the physical keyboards were designed like crap. Tiny *recessed* keys that even my small hands (I'm a 5'1" female and my hands are proportinately sized to that, so small) had a hard time typing them without looking to pinpoint with the tip of the nail. It was easier to use the iphone's touch keyboard that had a well designed interface.
As for the apps, Apple changed that by the time I got an iphone and got well supported for it. As I said, that's one of the things that would make me change my mind, if they lost a lot of developer's support and the apps went elsewhere. Of the things I made fun of the iphone for, in hindsight, Apple's (at the time) unwillingness to let you install 3rd party apps was the only thing I think I was right on (but I will say that was a huge negative and it would make it not worthwhile to me and would really kill the usefulness of the iphone to me cause what I like most about it is that it is versatile and I can keep adding functionality to it through apps. I'm still not sure how Apple managed to sell the first iphone like that, that alone would have turned me off from considering it.

If true about the 4S, OK ... whatever. Dual core processor plus better camera will be nice updates, particularly if iOS5 offers some compelling updates and new features. It will sell.
More importantly, I wonder if a fall release will be part of a new iPhone release strategy. There are new android devices every month. Offering iPhone updates 2x per year might be smart for Apple. Will we now see phone updates every fall and spring? To me, that might be the biggest news in all of this.
They aren't going to put the a5 or iOS 5 in a phone carrying the iPhone 4s branding. So either the 4s is bs or the 4s is going to be a radio update to 4 to be sold to the bottom end with the 5 in the top two spots.

I'd be interested to see if Sprint and/or T-Mobile's unlimited pricing would change with the inclusion of the iPhone. Or will they just up their rates as the big 2 have done, or even take away unlimited.
If they were smart they would keep their existing rate plans to lure over subscribers. I'd go.

I do like how they add cells to the table view scrolling to try and hide the lag in the system. That's kind neat. Adding it the accronym soup promo video even makes it seem like a feature.

That's the 2012 iPhone 5 (as I always said). There's nothing in their T&Cs saying they must update every June. Obviously they feel the iP4 design is going to stand the test of the time (personally, it will because no other design from the Android/WP7 crowd has responded with a great design) and a minor chip update will keep customers ticking over.
iOS5 for Apple is well above any new iPhone hardware. That's expected and that'll be the key to whether they can keep the iPhone popularity going. We all know Apple like to keep the big features awaiting for a long time for the right product at the right time. No-one "needs" a bigger screen, 64GB or 4G yet. You could go get a non-Apple product with these things patched up.

Anyone think two iPhones will be released?
An iPhone 5 with all new design, cameras, insides etc.. So Apple would be able to market a true 'iPhone 5'.
And a iPhone 4s with no cosmetic changes, with enhanced insides like battery/A5 etc.. , for people who like the old design, and a cheaper alternative to the 5.
Its about time Apple had some new phones in the market, the 4 is 11 months old and the 3GS is 23 months old I believe. A couple of new phones would really help against the likes of HTC, who turn out a new smartphone every couple of months.

I wonder has people confirmed that the iPhone 4S will include built-in near field communications support? If it does and it's fully compatible with the Sony FeliCa standard, the iPhone 4S could single-handedly wipe out a lot of feature phones with built-in NFC now sold in Japan and South Korea.

I'd love a larger screen on my iPhone but it's not a deal breaker because my iPad2 takes care of those duties. At the end of the day I don't want a huge hummer phone. Over the past couple of weeks I've been able to convert 3 VERY devout Android users over to the iPhone 4 thanks in part to it's availability on Verizon. However back on topic, no cosmetic changes are needed here as the design is very quintessential. However I feel like the real game changer here is iOS 5. If they can come up with better notifications instead of popping up in the middle of the screen when I'm trying shoot out a text or e-mail it would be greatly appreciated.

Not surprised in the least. Apple wasn't going to redesign their most impressive piece of hardware after 1 year. For all of it's flaws the iPhone 4 is still the most well designed piece of electronics I've ever seen.
iPhone 4, 5, 10, whatever it may be, the real update this year is coming with iOs. Everyone's iPhone 4 will be new at that point.

Who cares if it's a 4S or 5? Just as Apple blew their lead in the PC world with the Apple II and Mac they've blown it with the iPhone. Android phones have blown by the iPhone and left Apple in the dust once again. Even if you jailbreak your iPhone you still can't get all the features you can with one of the Androids running Sense. Take a look at the new Gingerbread Droid OS with Sense 3.0 and you'll see what I mean. The Android Marketplace has caught up to the App Store in terms of the selection and quality of apps. Jobs and company has once again squandered the lead. And what's pathetic is that they still can't get the antenna right and continue to have reception problems. I couldn't believe how much better the reception was on the Android phone with the same carrier that I was getting with my old iPhone.

That is the real deal. Look.up any hands on videos for the HTC EVO 3D or Sensation, it truly looks and works that smooth. With dual core 1.2ghz processors, and 1gb memory, running on Gingerbread code of course these new phones will be warp speed fast and smooth as hot butter, zero lag. Plus they comes with a 1750 battery, early word saying they match iPhone4 3G talk time.

It was a bad idea to market the 3G as the 3G in the first place. I know some people were confused when the iPhone 4 came out thinking that it was 4G.
So what. People are stupid. Who cares.

I really like both platforms. iOS has it's benefits as does Android. Just recently I switched from my iPhone 4 to an Inspire 4G. I used it over the weekend and returned it. The battery life isn't good on that device at all.
I like the more "open source" feel of the Droid but I have way too much invested in iTunes content that I can't easily put on a Droid. I really love the feel of the Droid and the larger screens are nice.
All that being said, if the next iPhone release (whether they call it 4S or 5) should have more than an A5 chip as an upgrade. I'm probably being way too optimistic but my wishlist is 64gb, A5 and a 4.0" screen. The current form factor is perfect IMO as it's much more resilient than the previous plastic versions. I doubt we'll see a bigger screen but I think an A5 and 64gb would be a nice upgrade for the next iOS release.
I just bought a Nook Color so I can root it and have a Droid device without the extra expense of paying the non-subsidized price of a Droid phone. Can't wait to try it out, it's actually coming today.

Come release date it will sell out like hotcakes.

This is cool.
Every year things get better !
I'm not an Apple fanatic (hardly) but this kind "bump" would have been a giant leap forward back in the 80's
Lets not forget how cool this is.
Microsoft is doing awesome stuff, Google too !
This is fun, and it will only get better.

I waited months after my contract was over with a 3GS figuring I would get a 5 when it is just a minor upgrade from the 4 - pretty disappointing.
It would be nice if some of the other manufacturers would actually take advantage of this to come out with something competitive.

4S is the upgrade. No need to go to 5 already. Remember 3G -> 3GS?????
That is because the Iphone 3gs was the iphone 3. it would have made no sense for them to call the iphone 3gs the iphone 3.
The first phone was the iphone, the 2nd was the 3g, the 3rd was the iphone 3gs. Then they called the 4th gen phone the iphone 4.
They have to call it the iphone 5 now and not the 4s because if they called it the iphone 4s then next phone would have to be in iphone 6.
Not going to happen.
The one thing I hope they fix is the glass back, I really hope they go with metal or hard plastic

Eventually they (Apple) will have to go to calling it just "iPhone" like they do with the MacBooks, MBP's, iPods, etc. And just refer to them internally as "6th gen" iPhone like they do with the iPods, or "mid-2011" iPhone as they do with the MacBooks/MBP's.

I'd be interested to see if Sprint and/or T-Mobile's unlimited pricing would change with the inclusion of the iPhone. Or will they just up their rates as the big 2 have done, or even take away unlimited.
I can't speak for t mobile bug sprint all has phones that use a lot of data. The HTC EVO, Samsung Epic and the HTC Arrive all are heavy data phones like the iPhone. And since sprint has been rated the most dependable network before (in terms of when you should get data, you do) I don't think it will he a problem for them.

Haven't read the entire thread but it seems to me it could be the 4GS as the 3G S didn't change much in appearance compared to the 3G. The S thing seems like it is designated perhaps for minor internal improvements.

I'm enjoying my 20mb download speeds on the Thunderbolt; particularly when tethering. Tethering is faster than my comcast connection. It'd be hard to go back to slower technology.
Apple's going to need to diversify with other carriers to help their marketshare while Android dominates with 400k activations per day and LTE phones.

i'm ok with a iphone 4s, but please give us a bigger screen!
I'm NOT OK with a 4s.
According to various reports around the web today we are getting a warmed over 4 called the 4S. How disappointing. It's only a minor upgrade with a hold on the iPhone 5 until 2012.
This is very bad news, although I doubt that sales will be affected.
What will be affected is those of us who are not fond of the current glass phone and it's flattened, plain appearance. It's tendency to shatter or crack, and it's silver border otherwise called an antenna.
Just when it looked like we would get a new style, a fresh start, a larger screen and all the major goodness that Apple can bring, they crap out and shelve the 5 until next year.

I'd be VERY surprised if it ends up being called 4S.
Look at some of you, all upset that "It's not the iPhone 5!!!" If they sold the same phone described there and just called it an iPhone 5, some of you would be saying "Well damn, I wanted 4G...but I guess I'll buy the iPhone 5 anyways."
And I guarantee you that the bottom 50% of non-techies would buy a 3G over a 3GS if nobody explained the difference to them in terms they could understand. "Oh, so the 3GS is the same phone...but slightly better? I don't need the fancy stuff, give me the 3G."
Do you think Apple would risk confusing customers, downplaying the next iPhone's upgrades in the process, just because they didn't redesign the form factor that much or add the features some of us wanted? Come on guys.

I think right now, it appears that the new iPhone 4S will sport the following features:
1. Will look like a slightly thicker iPhone 4, but the backing will now be metal instead of glass.
2. The IPS touchscreen will likely be 4" with the display going to the left and right edge of the phone (based on portrait orientation). Display will now consume less power than the iPhone 4.
3. Antenna is still the metal band wrap-around design, but the design of the of the antenna won't lose reception quality from "grip of death" situations.
4. Will use A5 CPU/GPU, the same chip found on the iPad 2.
5. Will use "universal" cellphone chipset that works with either GSM or CDMA, including HSDPA+ higher-speed data support on GSM. Will not likely support LTE unless the chipset can activate it through an eventual firmware/software update.
5. 512 MB RAM standard.
6. 16 and 32 GB flash memory storage.
7. Rear camera sensor same as on iPhone 4.
8. Supports Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity.
9. Includes near-field communications connectivity, including full compatibility with Sony's FeliCa standard (very necessary for NFC payment systems commonly used in Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong).

I was really hoping for:
Top of the line speeds compared to other smart phones
64 gb capacity
Better camera
Faster processor
Other than that, nothing else is really a make or break for me. I specifically didn't upgrade to the iphone 4 because they didn't increase the storage. To be honest, if they upgraded the storage alone, I'd go out and upgrade from my3Gs. If not, I will pass this year and wait till the next phone. I'm really hoping this isn't the case. :(

Given how somewhat bulky the HTC Thunderbolt is with its 4.3" touchscreen, I doubt Apple will do an iPhone with such a big screen. Now, 4.0" touchscreen is definitely possible with the iPhone 4S.

Apple takes a vacation? The rumor didn't say the words minor upgrade. It said the rumor said minor cosmetic changes. The processor is going to be a dual core processor and I be willing to bet ram will be too. And you shouldn't even expect a major redesign even next year -- it took Apple three generations to design the original iPhone design. (and btw, minor cosmetic changes could be changing the glass part that breaks.)

The EVO would be a better comparison or the galaxy s which are both pretty thin even compared to the iPhone 4 which ie actually pretty heavy.
Either way, the screen on the iPhone is just too small and the app store and iOS can't make up for that.

I've held in my hands an HTC Evo. While a nice phone, the width of the phone (based on portrait orientation) makes it a bit awkward to hold. That's why I think the iPhone 4S--it that's what Apple chose for the new model name--will look like a slightly thicker iPhone 4 but with edge-to-edge LCD touchscreen panel (left and right side based on portrait orientation).

Why would Apple care what Sprint or TMobile charge for monthly plans? Do Verizon & AT&T charge the same for plans?
Once Apple receives payment from the carrier for the device, why would it concern them if the carrier turns a profit?

If it lands on the Sprint network, any chance of Virgin Mobile reeling one in? $25 a month for unlimited everything on an iPhone would pretty much kill off android phones.
I highly doubt it in fact I would be surprised if it lands on Sprint or T-Mobile especially since AT&T is trying to grab TMobile.
One thing this would force AT&T to do is go back to the unlimited plan, because if the iPhone is on Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint with $30 unlimited plans, AT&T will have no choice but to cave in or what I see is all the other carriers going to a tier'd plan, they all can not stay different for long, it just will not work. I can also see carriers locking folks into a solid 24 month contract, Verizon does it and if everyone is going to compete for iPhone business, I see maybe even a 3 Year Contract coming like in Europe.

The android size criticism is overblown IMO. My EVO easily fits in the front pocket of jeans and the size has never been an issue. With that said, if apple goes to 4" rather than 4.3, I would still consider an iPhone. If it stays the same size as now, then no way.

Yeah my EVO is slim enough to fit in any pocket but I could easily live with a 4in screen. I've always thought the iphone/ipt screen just a wee small for my hands but the 4.3in just a bit too big to handle with on hand at times.

Doesn't T-mobile throttle speeds after a certain amount? And I'm pretty sure Sprint has a "soft" cap at 5gb although I haven't really heard of them enforcing it (even on myself for 4 years). Even then, I'm all for a sprint iphone. Even though AT&T data speeds have been 2-3x faster than the fastest speeds I got on Sprint, it's not nearly as reliable if you roam about.

I personally don't know if t mobile throttles the speed but I know Sprint will (with 4G, not sure on 3G). Right now, Sprint is truly unlimited -- if I somehow use more then 5GB of data then I don't get charged mor. This is for cell phone only, not wifi built into the phone or those mifi devices. The idea is people don't generally use more then 400mb of data on cell phones (avg iPhone user uses 300mb or around there). So sprint doesn't charge u more because you never will use too much. They have expressed if we start using insane amounts of data the policy will change. I personally don't think iPhone uses use more data than eco or HTC arrive users. I know webos users ar data hogs too. But I think the iPhone going to sprint will have an increase amount of traffic because sprint is cheaper and has truly unlimited. And with the news that sprint ties with VZ on bing best customer service is a good thing too.

With more capabilities these phones are offering average data usage will continue to increase. I stream pandora on my commute every day and use about 1gb monthly just on that. I imagine people that regularly stream videos like netflix and etc... will be pushing limits as well. Especially those that don't have access to wifi. I'm glad I have "unlimited" data on AT&T.

So let me get this straight...rumor is Apple is going to release the next iPhone in Sep...but the only update will be that it runs on other cell carriers. Therefore, in reality, the next update for an iPhone will be earliest Q2 2012 (Apple would wait 2 quarters at least before releasing an update of any product) which would then hopefully have some kind of new features.
So this would give Android (and others) to have all of 2011 and first half of 2012 to release more and more iPhone competitors.
Either this rumor doesn't hold any water, or Apple is just toying with disaster.
There is also confirmed that the next iPhone will have an 8MP camera with HD 1080p recording, 1GB RAM (Though Apple doesn't confirm RAM and other hardware until it's released), the new Apple A5 processor (Dual-Core) with much improved graphics. Apple hasn't mentioned LTE 4G support, but that doesn't mean Apple won't surprise people and announce it later on.
