Just been offered a single 1.25 MDD the very last Version. Mainly want it as an upgrade from my 500mhz g4. I use the G4 for Photo editing(Canon 1D MARK 1-circa 2001) and some audio work.

Ive been wanting the upgrade and have been thinking about a G5, but this G4 is 40, and the G5 i want is 195.

Is it worth picking up the G4? I want to run small amounts of ProTools and Adobe CS. maybe Lightroom 1.

Will it handle it all?

Geekbench numbers show it's more than twice as powerful as what you are using now...

http://www.primatelabs.ca/geekbench/mac-benchmarks/

They list a 500mhz Power Mac G4 in the 325-350 range, and the 1.25 single core G4 as 727. (a lot of people hate the Geekbench scores)

I do not have experience with ProTools and CS to offer advice on how well it will run those. I see from the ProTools website it lists the 1ghz and 1.25ghz solo G4's at the minimum requirements. If you max out the RAM it would probably be OK.

Of course that G5 would be better, but if money is a problem, the G4 price you've been offered is nice.

I agree, max out the RAM at 2GB and you should be fine.

Might be worth pointing out that in its stock form the MDD is one noisy machine (might be worth taking into account if you plan on doing some audio work).

If you're currently working with a 500MHz G4, either option is going to be a huge improvement. Personally, I would hold out until you can get the G5. I think you wouldn't regret it. Not sure about how a 1.25GHz G4 holds up, but I know my 1.8 DP G5 doesn't ever choke with 10.5.
