Moto covering their bases with this so as to not look bad? but then again it is very well known that Jobs is this way, however this isn't an Apple product, so i can't see him wanting to be too tight lipped about it really

exactly, the more they show it off is probably the better, gets it to more phones and more carriers, thus expanding the iTunes market and mindshare

Actually this article quotes Moto explaining that Apple is NOT delaying the phone's release--just the launch event.

Apparently Moto wants to announce it early and then ship units much later. Apple would rather wait and announce just prior to availability.

Motorola likes to show off its innovations early on, while Apple is notoriously tight-lipped about products up until their launch.

"Steve [Jobs]'s perspective is that you launch a product on Sunday and sell it on Monday," he said.

That said, Apple hasn't always managed it themselves :D

This is just freaking stupid. Oh joy Apple is exporting their dumb*** policies to other companies. Now lets hear everyone defend Apple with some stupid excuse. :(

The only bright side is Apple must be seriously involved in the design of the hardware. I just don’t see Apple freaking out if they only provided the software.

This is just freaking stupid.

What are Apple and Motorola losing by not announcing months ahead of actual availability? What is so much more important than the advantages of announcing a SHIPPING product that not pre-announcing is "freaking stupid"?

As for Apple influencing the companies they partner with... does any company not do that? Motorola influences Apple too.

PS, I hope you're right about Apple being involved in the hardware! It COULD be something pretty nice in the usability department if so!

Get a grip! If you are a leading market manager for a major corporation I might listen, but this comment is as prepubescent as it gets, given that you are *not*!!!. So, get a glass of milk, take a very deep breath and spend an hour or so removing your navel lint--- it will help--- really!!!

I've been watching the phone market for some years now and its pretty typical to hear about a phone and most of its specs anything up to a year before it actually appears. This power of Apple to hold up a phone to a time frame that looks like its going actually coincide with a shipping date is really unusual.

I don't agree with this. Having iTunes on a phone that probably syncs with a desktop iTunes most likely involves some kind of software revision. Perhaps Apple isn't quite ready to release this revision.

My wishful thinking is that the mobile phone enabled iTunes is 5.0, and is part of Tiger. In which case it's looking more and more like it will see the light of day sometime in April. (coming soon!)

Nah, Apple would have had plenty of "input" into the look of their joint phone. Its a significant future market for Apple and they need to get it right.

I just don't think Apple is in the business of making phones. Leave that to the phone manufacturers. What Apple IS interested in is supplying (read: licensing) additional software for said phone.

I guess we'll know for sure in ~ a month.

I agree that Apple involvement in the hardware is a long shot and would be unusual. But it still sounds just POSSIBLE and could be cool!

It seems to me that Steve plays the same game as the cell carriers and phone makers all the time.

Announce product. Announce shipping will be "later." Miss shipping date. Ship later. Apple is historically guilty of this kind of marketing behavior.

Perhaps the phone won't be ready for six more months in volume (should be a good seller) and even Steve's Reality Distortion Field™ can't extend that far into the future AND cover both Mac and Windows buyers at the same time.

He's only human, right? Right?

Hello?

I bet Motorola has been hangin' out for ages waiting for a chance to criticise Apple. It used to go the other way.
