As noted by The Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304066504576344841307500246.html), the iPhone 4 is finally launching in India, with the device making its debut on carriers Bhati Airtel and Aircel this Friday. In a news release, Aircel said it will offer the new model of iPhone--which is popular for its high-speed Internet and mobile software capabilities--under both post-paid and pre-paid subscription plans.

It will charge 34,500 rupees ($763) for iPhones with a 16 gigabyte capacity and 40,900 rupees for those with capacity of 32 gigabytes. Users will be able to recover the cost in monthly credits in their subscription accounts over 24 months, it said in a statement. The prices may vary in some states due to local taxes on mobile phones, it added.

A Bharti Airtel spokeswoman said the company would also offer the iPhone 4 under similar schemes and price ranges. The two carriers have approximately 220 million customers between them, more than a quarter of India's total mobile phone subscriber base and obviously a significant new opportunity for Apple.

Both Bhati Airtel and Aircel operate GSM networks, meaning that Apple is not yet deploying the CDMA iPhone 4 in India. Last fall, reports surfaced (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/10/12/cdma-iphones-headed-to-india/) claiming that Apple was in talks to bring the iPhone to CDMA carriers Reliance and Tata in India, but apparently no agreement has yet been reached.

Almost the average yearly income for a citizen of India. I'd rather have reliable electricity.

Although you can buy a brand new Tata Nano car for $3,100

Lebanon, and whats more ridiculous is the $1450 price tag for the 32GB. This is the exact reason why i dont have an iphone.

Impressive - there are still countries where the iPhone4 is not sold? Are there more countries on the list to get them 'soon'?

Is that the official retail price at a carrier or is it some black market price? If retail, how long is the required contract for that price and what are the monthly charges for it?

There are people who own Bentleys and Rolls Royce. There are people who work their asses off for more than 20 hours a day to earn a day's meal.

Proud to be an Indian :D

Apple is definitely milking the iPhone 4 as many ways as it can.

Thats the retail price, the 2 options are: pay that price as a pay as you go plan with no internet or data allowance or pay that price plus $35 a month if you want 500MB data limit on edge only and no free minutes or messages. Which is pathetic.

Better late than never I guess... The iPad 1 also took like 6 or 7 months to get to Portugal...

I'll sell you my 8 GB iPhone 3G running iOS 4.2 (which works fine) for $200 plus shipping!

Many countries dont have contract based system yet, which means Apple can only sell the factory unlocked models there. Factory unlocked iPhone costs $599 in the US, which with various taxes and import duties become twice the original cost when it reaches the buyer.

Please go back and re-read the tarriff (as they say it there). $35 covers lot more than what we pay here in US. It does include minutes and SMS, though not unlimited.

Wrong. Apple does not sell unlocked phones in the U.S.

If that's the retail price of the iPhone, I'd hate to see the msrp for an iPad in India

The pricing is ridiculous, INR 34500 for an iPhone 4 16GB with 2-year contract. Thats $760 + contract! In comparison Samsung Galaxy S II sells for less than $600 unlocked. And also iPhone 4 is a year old...

Not the networks fault, get answers from Apple if you really want answers.
