Macbook pro 15" 2010 i5, still a good purchase?

I have the i7 2.66 and with a fast SSD and 8GB RAM in it it does everything I need, but if I was buying today there would need to be significant discounts to make me not get a new one. Although TB is all the rage, by the time we have a good selection of peripherals a new MBP will be coming up!
It's only $400 less than the current low-end model (unless you want a glossy screen).
I guess it is if the 2010 has the parts to deal with whatever it is that you want to use it for and you want to save $400 (when purchasing for the Apple Store).

Sounds like a good deal to me. The GT 330m in the 2010 15" MBP's outperform the AMD 6490m in the 2011 MBP's, so if you were keen to game, the 2010 would be ideal for that price.

The 2010 models were good in that it doesn't produce as much heat/noise as the 2011 models. So if you don't need the extra performance of the quad core, then it would be a better user experience.
Graphics with the 330M is about equivalent the low end 2011 15" model with the AMD 6490M.
256MB or 512MB 330M speeds are exactly the same. It will only matter if crank up your resolution.. but if running native resolution or only slightly higher reoslution, the 512mb 330M is no faster.

I'd say buy it.. thats what i did..
the money you saved instead of buying the base 2011 15" can be used for applecare..plus i think thats the going rate already for 2010 so I don't think you'll loose much money if you want to sell it down the line to upgrade and by that time TB is already matured and new models are already out..

If you aren't doing something very CPU intensive or some extreme gaming, a '10 with a SSD + 8 Gb RAM will be faster in almost everything you do in everyday computing than the base model '11 with hdd +4 Gb. 😉
