Is there a generic paint program somewhere in my PowerBook that I could use to make a simple map graphic? All I need to do is draw a few simple lines and insert some street names next to them.

If you're thinking of something similar to Windows Paint, then no. Where have you gone, MacPaint?

Is it a new PowerBook? Mine came with OmniGraffle, which you could use to do this. Check in your Applications folder. It's probably not as simple/quick as a paint program for this kind of task, but it's an option if you have it.

Maybe this utility (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21387) would fit the bill? I haven't tried it, but it sounds like what you want. It's freeware...

Didn't your machine come w/ GraphicConverter? That's got all the tools Paint has.
