When I put in my OS X Installation disk into my Mac, (the only disk I put into my Mac - for disk utility etc. - so I don't know if the problem persists with other disks) the super drive begins to spin the disk and there is a loud humming noise. I feel vibrations - even on the desk under it! The disk also does things really slow. The disk spins for about 3 seconds and stops and then starts. I'm afraid this will damage my hardware because of the fast spinning. Can I fix this?

Take it in. You could open it up and check the housing for the optical drive, but I dont know if you could do much else.

What's your experience with optical drives? The ones in MBP's are substantially louder than most and slower. A "loud humming noise" is normal, though "loud" is subjective. Can you post a video?
