Should I jailbreak to use GV for free texts?

Apologies if this has been covered many times, I'm new to the iPhone (don't make fun of me!) and tried doing some research.

I mainly want to use Google Voice to have one number I can give out for calls and to use free texting.

Is GV Mobile+ a good solution without jailbreaking? Are the extensions with jailbreaking still better?
