Looks like they're upholding that grand tradition.

I don't think Apple is trying to hide this icon, I mean they already announced the service so probably not trying to keep the icon under wraps. Looks more professional then the MM icon IMO. I like it.

No I can tell one is a music note it's the 3rd icon. I opened in GIMP but could get zoomed in with out killing the picture. There are at lease 4 icons in the cloud part. I'm guessing Music, Video, but wonder what the other 2/3 are?

iCloud won't be the biggest announcement.

The biggest announcement will be that iCloud will replace all existing Apple products. Macs, iPods, Apple TVs, iPhones and iPads will be compressed into a single chip the user will have implanted at the base of the hippocampus, giving the user complete and intuitive access to the Internet and Apple's NC data center.

This will make way for a new type of profession known as "couriers". They will carry sensitive information for political groups and corporations. The side effect of the implant will prove to be the loss of a great deal of long term memory.

In the near future, Apple will introduce an upgrade known as a "memory doubler" which will prove to be unstable and may cause permanent brain damage. This upgrade will be taken off the market, and never heard of again. Until, a long term side effect of the implant will appear, causing wide spread neuro-breakdowns.

A cure will appear and a heroic courier will use the upgrade to carry the cure into the right hands. His name: Johnny Mnemonic.

well the icon looks almost like the iDisk one. This allows for the speculation that the iDisk will be discontinued altogether and replaced by a function of the icloud service.

The iDisk is very slow but I honestly like the fact that it is a stand alone service. If it gets mixed up into all the other cloud services like itunes streaming, backups, app store, mobile iworks and what not I wouldn't be happy. I'm not interested in any of the cloud services that are rumored so having my private online storage mixed up into a complicated sytem of iOS updates and iTunes streaming services would be a step back.

The only way iCloud would be worth paying for:

-It syncs up ALL of my iTunes songs to the cloud, not just the ones I've purchased via the iTunes store. I have a lot of music I didn't purchase through iTunes and the cloud is worthless to me if I can't add the songs I've ripped from CDs over the years.

-I can set my iOS devices to sync with iCloud, so when I add a song to iTunes, iTunes adds it to iCloud then iCloud adds it to my iOS devices(s). I want the option of storing my songs on my iOS device not simply streaming from the cloud.

-I can access my iCloud music via web browsers or on iTunes of a friend's computer to listen to my music when I'm not around my devices.

I have been reading, Ive read only purchased itunes songs will be available on icloud, which is roughly 5% of itunes libraries, you can use dropbox to stream music no matter where you got it from! as an example!

I'm not seeing any logos or things inside the cloud like a few of you posted, it just looks like a series of gradients in the background, maybe the glass reflection is throwing that off for you guys?

I'm not sure I like the background of the icon based on this crappy picture

Edit: based on the clearer picture posted and someone pointing out that every other apple icon seems to be blue, my mind is changed
Minimal variety FTW

you are correct, http://cl.ly/0a243W110l1w0J471N0u thats the google street view from across the road. its the reflection of TASTE in the window, it was annoying me that people believed it to be app icons

It seems like Apple has great design taste for pretty much everything except their online services graphics.

Looks like they're upholding that grand tradition.

The blue crystal ball icon they unveiled for iTools (a gray variant of which still exists in OS X representing the network) was pretty cool. I remember thinking what a great icon design that was when I first saw it. It's starting to look a little dated at this point, but not lacking in taste, IMO.

To be honest, people never really like the icon upon release, remember the fuss about the iTunes icon change. We will all get used to it, at the end of the day, its only an icon. :)

I like the new iCloud icon - but the fuss over the itunes icon was because it is way too similar to the safari icon at quick glance. I for one accidentally click the wrong one all the time.

I have been reading, Ive read only purchased itunes songs will be available on icloud, which is roughly 5% of itunes libraries, you can use dropbox to stream music no matter where you got it from! as an example!
My hope is this a subscription deal, say £10 a month stream any song you want, a bit like spotify, if not I dont think many will use or pay for it, looking forward to Monday though and some news on ios5

of you've read through the stuff properly, its saying that the purchased on iTunes is just the start, there's been lots of talk about it being all songs you have..........

Pretty sure this isn't how they would've wanted it to be discovered.

On the contrary. Sounds like Apple PR 101 to me.
I mean, it's public knowledge that Steve will be discussing, amongst other things, iCloud. Seeing a cell phone camera shot of an icon does little to spill any beans. But it certainly can get the blogosphere all hot and bothered.
Put another way? If Apple didn't want us to see that icon, we wouldn't. It really is that simple.

I sure hope Apple has some surprises up their sleeves for WWDC. First off, I've never seen them pre-announce the topics of the Keynote. So either they just changed their policy or they are conceding the stuff we already know and have a bunch of surprises.

But this banner seems to indicate that WWDC is all about iCloud, iOS 5, and Lion. Unless each of those things is fantastic in ways we cannot imagine, then I see this potentially being as lack-luster as Google I/O was.

1) Lion: we've seen most of this already in the developer releases though they may be a few things they have not shown us.

2) iCloud: If they are really launching sans-music-streaming and with no ability to upload your music ripped from CD's then it becomes far less useful than a cloud-based hard drive.

3) iOS-5: This one is the only wildcard in the game -- no idea what this is bringing.

Things I would like to see:

Lion: An MacBook Air that converts to an iPad and runs iOS apps. Have Lion contain an iOS layer so you can really have everything in one machine.

iCloud: Seamless synchronization across apps and cloud storage and streaming for music and movies (regardless of where purchased). Replacement for many things I rely on iTunes for now as well.

iOS-5: Bluetooth or WiFi sync, better notifications and maybe better multi-tasking, but other than that please surprise me (I'm in the market for a new iPhone).

If iCloud only lets you stream iTunes music then for large music collections that were bought on iTunes it may be useful since you can sync your non-iTunes music and stream the iTunes stuff and thus save space on your device, but honestly my music is one of the smallest parts of my device's storage. Videos and apps take up most of the space on my device -- If I could put my videos in the cloud and pin the couple I want to keep in the device that would be fantastic.

There is no source that says iCloud is a replacement of MobileMe, we haven't heard anything about it integrating email.

I think it's pretty clear. Apple called iCloud their "cloud services" on the press release, and there has been evidence of iCloud stuff in Lion. (http://www.9to5mac.com/70274/icloud-icon-revealed-looks-familiar/)

But you're right, it is speculation. We'll find out soon enough.

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/06/02/wwdc_2011_banners_going_up_at_moscone_center.html

That "Lion + iOS 5 + iCloud = WWDC 11" banner is so disjointed, the 3 different images just don't gel together. Pretty shoddy design considering it's Apple.

My expectations are somewhat down after seeing the iOS 5 icon with the same waterdrop background as in iOS 4.
There are so many signs that point to a moderate update:

- Notifications? Could also be an bigger iOS 4.x update
- iCloud? Just update the iDisk app and improve upload/download capabilities. But maybe there's a connection to Lion's AirDrop feature...
- Widgets? Don't see it happening
- Improved Lockscreen? Maybe as part of the new notification system.
- New UI? Don't think so, especially since Apple showed Launchpad for Lion. It's the same grid-like UI, even with the same fugly folders...

My lowered predictions for iOS 5:

- iCloud syncing for some media, but not everything
- MobileMe still around, but with tiered pricing plans
- Notifications, but not something completely new or revolutionary, just less annoying.
- Improved Mail app (Flags, rich & selectable HTML signatures per account, etc.)
- WebKit 2 engine for Mobile Safari (Release of Safari 6 for Lion)
- Reading List syncing with iOS devices
- AirDrop capability with unified Files app
- More business and security features for enterprises
- Maybe improved SMS app?? (Twitter integration, WhatsApp killer?)
- API for unified File location with Folders set-up
- Facetime over 3G

Again, I hope for more. My inner fanboy demands it:D! But I try set to my expectations low. The iPad 2 event already lacked a lot of new things and I don't see many crazy new things as far as integration of iOS and Lion besides Files and media syncing with iCloud/AirDrop.

My prediction, that you not only will be able to use @mac, @me, or @icloud, but they'll introduce the option of using any domain you have registered, just like you already can do with a google apps account. It's technically Gmail, but using your own domain instead of gmails.

'Lion + iOS 5 + iCloud' says to me that all these three things are linked in a much bigger way than what we think.

Yes the two we know are developer platforms. The third is being released at a developer conference. Yet most people think it's just a music streaming and maybe iDisk/iSync replacement. They say in advertising that all images are crafted so that nothing implied is not intended. Apple are the masters of no casual references. They do seem to pride themselves on obtuse references. Which would include these in posters and the fact that they have allowed them to be seen. The invite said "come see the future of Mac OS X and iOS" which now includes iCloud at the same level as them.

Something is not gelling.
I get the feeling iCloud is a HTML5 app platform.

Re: the aluminum iCloud icon...

Maybe this points toward a case redesign of both the AEBS and Time Capsule? Finally bringing the case design in line with the current aluminum/glass/black theme they have established (now the lone hold out is the MacBook). If true, the device could get somewhat smaller... Something between an TV2 and Mac mini. They could drop the AEBS completely, remove the physical storage from TC in favor of a "send all backups to the iCloud" feature... as a way to tie more people to their MobileMe/iCloud services.

Or not. :p

AL enclosure sounds plausible, except, wouldn't that hinder the antennas? There would be some portion of it that would have to be black plastic, and even then, I doubt it would get as good reception as the version we have now.

No way will TM hard storage be removed--cloud backups would take forever. I could see them potentially axing TM and sticking a few extra USB ports on the Extreme, with full support for Time Machine backups over an attached external drive.

I'm pretty surprised by Apple's banner for this year's WWDC. The previous banners were more of a teaser, and for this year it's WWDC = A + B + C. They pretty much lay it out for you!

Also the press release last week, they mentioned iCloud a week before WWDC.

What happened to Apple's secretive nature? I'm guessing they are doing this so Apple fans have less expectation, and less people are disappointed. Bad PR isn't good for stock.

I don't think I saw this posted yet as most people have been focusing on the iCloud icon, but has anyone else noticed the Lion icon? At first glance I thought it was the standard image of the DVD, but upon closer inspection, it reminded me of the App Store and iTunes icons. I do not think I have ever seen OS X signified in this way. Apple has always used either the stylized X or an image of the DVD (which may not exist for this os).

I have to say I am not too keen on the idea of downloading a 4 GB os if it is the only option available. Release day traffic (unless Apple has some crazy bandwidth that they have yet to demonstrate) will likely result in 3 hour+ downloads even on decent connections. It is far faster for me to drive to the Apple Store and buy the DVD (or better yet, get it the morning of the release before the store opens via UPS)

OS X Lion also has circular User icons and AirDrop icons. Maybe it's a design motif they're trying to push, much as reflections, glossiness, rounded corners, outer space, etc.

Yes, this year seems jam-packed! I think it will be a WWDC to remember.

I too am curious about where the various OSs and devices are headed. Windows 8 seems typical Microsoft. Put something out just because you can, not because you should or because it's ready. No integration, no modification of the Windows 7 UI, blind multitasking, etc. You can bet if/when Apple does this, it will blow everyone away and be a hallmark moment, like the 2007 iPhone announcement. 2011 + 2 years seems about right. With Lion, we are seeing inklings of how the software can be unified. But I just don't see any glimpse of what the hardware will look like - if it will change at all.

Steve Jobs knocked on-display Multitouch for laptops, but I wonder if he seriously doesn't think there's potential for a unified device - or if there's some huge outside-the-box thing I'm not imagining.

I'm taking a wild guess here:

I believe that it has to do with Apple's current size. Back in the day they could afford to be secretive and surprise their customers and stock holders, because for the most part all their stock holders were big fans of the company no matter what, same with the customers. Now Apple is big and their customers are just about everyone since most people in their markets own at least a couple Apple products. This doesn't afford them the nimble and secretive moves and announcements Apple used to be able to do.

Note: I pulled this out of my ass. I really have no idea, but it's a possibility. Anyone with real knowledge of big business want to comment on my thought?

iCloud is going to be the iOS file system that everyone wants. Basically, it will be a Dropbox clone for Mac and iOS, with new APIs for apps.

Giving iCloud equal billing to Lion and iOS 5 means that it has to be bigger than just music streaming. Why would music streaming be a part of the equation that equals WWDC?

Yeah...major API being the "iAd"-API. Sorry to chime in in a pessimistic way but I rather think the equation means Steve's part of the keynote will sound like:

"First we got iAd on iOS. It works great. *insert a graph and typical RDF-blah-blah about iAd here*

Now with the advent of Lion you will be able to offer your apps for Mac OS X for free on the MacApp-Store. Just earn your money with iAds. I couldn't really see a reason for the icon needing to be used anyway? I'd assume inbuilt support into iTunes and iPod.app so maybe we'll see a small icon of it but surely it won't be used in a standalone app?
That said, Apple could also go a different direction to what I'm assuming so it could mean we'd see it. Just my 2 cents.

When they'll change the bubble wallpaper theme?

It's been 2 years already!

I think there is a very limited range of information that can be keep under wraps any more. I still think there will be surprises.

The one thing they're good at keeping secret is anything to do with iOS 5. No screenshots or blurry spy photos have been leaked. Some logical next step features (better notifications which should have been in iOS4 and iCloud integration) are to be assumed, but no solid proof yet.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8J2)

They seem way less secretive about this event. Looking forward to Monday!

I don't like the icon. I won't be using it anyway.

So judging from these pics:
Image (http://d2omthbq56rzfx.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Skärmavbild-2011-06-02-kl.-21.23.46.png) + Image (http://d2omthbq56rzfx.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Screen-shot-2011-06-02-at-3.36.41-PM.png) = iCloud

Same. I immediately thought of iSync when I saw this. Maybe that's why the iSync app is gone with Lion (besides the fact that its functionality was dated). iCloud will likely involve some kind of syncing too, so maybe they're consciously making a subtle iSync 2.0 reference, but I'm surprised they'd bother.

I'm actually surprised they're using the brushed steel effect. That's one we haven't seen in a long time...

iCloud is going to be the iOS file system that everyone wants. Basically, it will be a Dropbox clone for Mac and iOS, with new APIs for apps.

Giving iCloud equal billing to Lion and iOS 5 means that it has to be bigger than just music streaming. Why would music streaming be a part of the equation that equals WWDC?

If Apple can do it right, this could end Dropbox...

What would the internal storage be for, then? It's currently for apps and app documents, and music/media. If Apple take music/media to the cloud, then it's just an app storage mechanism and for app documents. They could be seeing the internal storage more as a cache for cloud-stored documents and apps. That would allow them to cut the flash and hence the size/price for future models.

On the other hand, I really want a decent local filesystem. For things like the iPad, and with flash prices coming down and capacity increasing, it makes no sense to limit the role of internal storage, especially with the connectivity requirement being so much more of an idealistic than a practically realisable goal, and that networking uses more data and power overall than locally stored content.

iCloud... what an awful name.

Time to stop beating the dead horse. Try something different, Apple.
