You have to start with the basics, there is a book out there called "iPhone 4 Exploring The SDK" by Apress. This book will help you with tutorials wich you can work with and identify the code and it's functions. Then from there, do more and more complex stuff(probably in more books) until you know enough code to build your own app. :)

Various reports are that fairly proficient C programmers starting with no iOS or Mac background have gotten non-trivial iPhone apps developed in from 2 weeks to 2 months. If you are not already a good programmer, then add between 2 months and 2 years, assuming you don't give up.

There are a few template generators that will allow a non-programmer to drop stuff into making an iPhone app, but they are extremely limited IMHO.

thenewboston.com has video tutorials on obj-c and iphone programming
start with the obj-c and get the basics

the apress book mentioned above is a good start too (but you need some knowledge of obj-c)

I also highly recommend the Standford Lectures on iPhone development. You can find the iTunes U quite easily.
