Can I wipe disk clean on old MBP by connecting it to new MBP?

I need to wipe the old one clean to sell it, and of course, the ODD on the old one is broken. So, can I connect the two with a firewire and do it in Target Disk mode?
 
Thanks - don't have an enclosure so will go the firewire route.
