Powerbook mic better than using iMic?

I just purchased a Griffin iMic and a cheap Shure microphone just to mess around in Garageband. I have no problems with the sound quality of the internal mic, its just that the fan interrupts the recording. When using the iMic/Shure microphone, the sound quality is VERY distorted and the volume is very low. Any suggestions??

have you checked in the system preferences to make sure that your input is set to the iMic and not the internal microphone?

well yes...if i hadn't i wouldn't have anything to compare the poor sound to...?
