Line for WWDC 2011 keynote (via @reneritchie (http://twitter.com/#!/@reneritchie))
With just under two and a half hours to go before Apple CEO Steve Jobs takes the stage for his keynote address at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco, it's time for us to set the stage with final details on the latest rumors and coverage information.

Attendees have been securing their spots (http://storify.com/xdamman/wwdc11) in line early to ensure that they will have seats in the main auditorium rather than being shunted to an overflow room to watch the keynote on video.

Coverage

As we noted over the weekend (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/05/wwdc-kicks-off-on-monday-mac-os-x-lion-ios-5-and-icloud/), MacRumors will be offering live text and photo updates from the keynote through MacRumorsLive.com (http://www.macrumorslive.com). The main MacRumors.com page will automatically redirect to MacRumorsLive as we get closer to the event, so stay tuned here. We will also be providing Twitter updates through our @MacRumorsLive (http://twitter.com/macrumorslive) account.

Apple has not yet offered any indication that it will provide live streaming video of the keynote.

MacRumors forum members interested in a "spoiler-free" environment to wait for the full keynote video to become available are gathering in our dedicated thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1163940). A direct link to the official keynote video will be posted there when it becomes available.

Rumors

While it appears extremely unlikely that Apple will introduce a new iPhone today, the company undoubtedly has a full agenda as it seeks to show off Mac OS X Lion, iOS 5, and its new iCloud service. Rumors have suggested that the iCloud service could utilize a revamped iOS-based Time Capsule (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/03/new-time-capsules-to-run-ios-on-a4a5-processors/) to serve as the hub for data access (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/05/new-time-capsules-to-act-as-hub-for-icloud-data-syncing/) and potentially for caching software updates (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/02/apple-testing-new-time-capsules-for-caching-software-updates/) for other machines and devices.

One key part of the iCloud service that has been receiving significant media attention is a music streaming service to allow users to access their purchased music from a variety of Internet-connected devices. Apple is said to have paid the four major music labels up to $150 million (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/03/apple-paying-music-labels-up-to-150-million-for-icloud-streaming-rights/) for the right to offer the service, and with agreements reportedly also in place with the major music publishers, Apple appears nearly ready to go on that aspect of iCloud. The service has been said to come with a free trial period to be followed eventually by an annual fee in the range of $25.

iOS 5 has been kept under wraps by Apple thus far, although we've seen indications of enhanced notifications and widgets (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/05/27/ios-5-to-bring-revamped-notification-system-and-widgets/) as well as "deep" Twitter integration (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/03/more-claims-of-deep-twitter-integration-in-ios-5/). Another development comes from a leak on Apple's iTunes update pages, which revealed (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/03/itunes-leaks-automatic-download-over-the-air-updates-in-ios-5/) a new "Automatic Download" feature that could allow users to have updated apps and perhaps other content appear on their iOS devices without the need manually sync each one. It is unclear, however, whether the feature is directly tied to iOS 5 or if it could be supported with an update to iOS 4 in the nearer term.

Apple has also been working hard on Mac OS X Lion and a fair amount of information on the release has been made public through Apple's "sneak peek" offered last October and followed up with a series of developer preview builds pushed out beginning in February. Apple has said that Lion will make its debut this "summer", but we've been hearing variety of potential dates within that period for the launch, making it difficult to pin down how soon after WWDC we can expect it to ship.

Apple should be giving everyone free iPods for having to wait in such long lines. Come on, Apple! Don't you care about your customers or are you too busy lining your pockets. I'm done with this company!!!

How bout some toggle sliders in the iOS settings to turn off twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other social media integration. Those of us who prefer not to waste our time with tweeting our likes, dislikes, and whereabouts, would like to have the option of not seeing it in our iOS menus, etc. Shouldn't be hard to do. I don't Flickr either, thank you.

Not enough chairs for everyone in the main room. They'll make sure everyone there sees it, but that could mean watching it on a TV in another room. Some folks apparently don't think that's good enough!

The seats are first-come first-served. People would rather sit in row 1-10 than row 40+. Plus, only the first 2,000 people or so get to watch in the real room, all the others must watch in the overflow room via monitors.

What are the chances that we can get Lion within a week? As far as I know there was no GM Seed (don't know if there is usually one for OS X, but I would assume)?

So maybe GM tonight and public release by end of the month?

Very cool. Thanks for the coverage. I just purchased a brand new iMac and it obviously won't come pre-loaded with Lion so I hope they offer some kind of discount or free upgrade if it's released in the next few weeks.

They will probably offer it free (or for a $9.99 shipping charge) to every Mac purchased between the announcement and release date. They don't want sales affected. As of the release date, machines built beforehand will have drop-in discs (or possibly Mac App Store freebie codes) with them, while online orders may still have to get a disc in the mail. I'll wait till it either preloaded or comes with a disc dropped in the box to get my new 27" iMac.

Here is what I think will announce during the WWDC 2011 opening keynote (this is just my prediction):

Prediction:
-iOS 5 (out in September):
Revamped Notifications
Widgets (finally bringing calculator, weather app, etc. to iPad)
iCloud Related Improvements
-Mac OS X Lion (Out by the end of June):
What has already been announced + improvements that have to do with iCloud
-iCloud:
Wireless syncing service
iCloud = wireless itunes (itunes in the cloud)
Streaming music (streaming + saving to your device for later playback)
Major Time Capsule Revamp

NO iPhone 5/4S here
NO Macbook Air revamp here

I ordered my 27" last week but it hasn't shipped yet course I ordered it with the i7. I hope I don't have to pay for it. The Mac rep was cool about it and said he'd take care of me re: Lion. He also got me a discount on a AppleCare down to $84 or close to that.

The biggest issue for me is syncing to a non-iPhone. I am currently using a Pre. I am a Verizon customer so before very recently an iPhone was not even an option. But over the last year I've become quite accustomed to WebOS and, while the implementation is not as elegant as iOS (and acquisition of Palm by HP gives me little hope it will keep pace), it's still better (in my view) than Android.

(HP was unforgivably late in seeking a licensing deal with Nokia, but that's another story.)

In any case, until the data plans for iPhones are competitive with Android and other non-iOS devices, I will get an iPhone only reluctantly ... but right now, syncing contacts (I don't even care that much about music syncing) and calendars from a Mac (or MobileMe) is a huge hassle.

The iCloud would seem to suggest that Apple wants to make it easier for non-Mac owners to use iPhones. All I want is the other side of that coin: make it easier for non-iPhone users to use Macs.

Answer me this: Why are they claiming theirs is live and yet CNN is delaying half an hour?

What's the reason for CNN's delay? (My guess is Apple's forcing them.) And why is Engadget not being delayed? (My guess is they're not actually showing the keynote.)

If your theory is different than mine then you need to explain the difference between CNN and Engadget because I can't think of anything else to explain it.

Keynote, no. I'm sure their careers won't suffer if they aren't in the front row lovingly looking at Steve.

I will be heading into work and barricading myself in my office so I can watch the updates.

My WWDC checklist includes...

Make a Sandwich: 12:45
Get a drink: 12:50
Set up sandwich and drink in office: 12:52
Make sure I am on MacRumors Live, 9to5 Mac and Engadget: 12:54
Go to the bathroom, nothing worse then having to pee in the middle of the keynote: 12:55
Sit down and wait for the coverage to start: 12:58

Yep.. I am ready.

In fairness, I think what that is is simply Engadget will be streaming (read:broadcasting) live from WWDC, rather than Engadget actually showing the conference live....
Think so too. I was watching the video when they said they had to get get inline but would be streaming live after the keynote with an analysis of what transpired.

Wouldn't be surprised if Lion was made available via MAS by week end.

Might be a little bit early, but I think it's reasonable. The Dev Previews have been really stable, so I'm betting that they'll release Gold Master this week and then available in the App Store shortly after that. The wait shouldn't be too long.

My predictions:

iCloud: Not just music streaming and not just software update caching. Much more. What was that last Microsoft failed phone that they killed after a month or so? Most reveiws seemed to like the centralized web portal that the phone used as a service to store your friends, media, etc. iCloud will be similar. It will store your media, but it will also be Apple's Dropbox and Remote Access tool. All apps will have a place to store and share files now. No more emailing attachments or "save to Dropbox". Developers will have a simple API to tap into iCloud for storage.

Plus, on the Mac side...Remember "Back to my Mac"? Or the home folder on iPod? here it is, finally. You will be able to go to any Mac and log in as it is your Mac. Not sure if it will require a Time Capsule...

iOS 5

The obvious "improved notifcations"
iPhone 4 gets an Expose like app switcher
New API for apps to grab data and files from iCloud; there will be a public shared area for apps to share docs and each app will have it's own private area
Live updating of icons (think Weather apps)
Notifications, Events, Email on lock screen

I know this is a stretch, but I really want Apple to take on a more serious role into the world of gaming. An announcement about this would be thrilling. I want to be able to play games like Battlefield 3 and Elder Scrolls on my Mac, without Windows. I know its up to the developers to make the game for the platform. But they refuse to invest in it because few consider the Mac as a serious gaming platform. And then I assume, Apple is hesitant to make the Mac a more serious gaming platform, because few developers make games for it. It is a vicious cycle. I want it to end.

Unfortunately that is true for a lot of software (from a lot of companies) these days ... but yes, the 'fans' (no matter from with company) see the potential and are patient enough until the initial problems are fixed.

An OS release spans every level of complexity from assembler firmware to the highest, most abstracted level of userspace. It has bugs. And an OS is many orders of magnitude more complex now than it was even 10 years ago, and there are many more millions (billions?) of people using them and discovering edge cases.

There are always bugs, and not everything can be anticipated in testing. People who can't live with this are a little mental and a lot unrealistic. They must live frustrating lives. People who do live with it are by no means "fanboys" of anything in particular. Some are, but most are just people with, you know, realistic expectations.

Yes, it would be great if he announced that he's now full-time again.

It be nice but he really does not need to. Even in the background Steve is well informed. I rather he not stress himself or his health just to do day to day work that is not as important as it seems. Apple is a mature company so Steve does not need to be dealing with every little thing going on.

If we do only get widgets in the pull-down notification screen that's a bit useless!

I want widgets in-line with my other app icons or on their own dedicated springboard home-screen so I can unlock the phone and see those widgets right away, up to date, with the latest tidbits from Facebook and Twitter... even though most of said tidbits are total waste of my time. Also 3rd party apps should be able to be/have widgets.

I'm excited for this announcement, but I'm also preparing myself for dissapointment (as we always should with these events, Apple's idea of amazing new things that we really need sometimes are just a bit rubbish to be honest and the stuff we really wanted doesn't happen)

That's why it seems ridiculous that no one is anticipating new hardware today, I think the new iphone will be announced personally.

New iphone will have its own presentation with huge media buildup, not today. It's not ridiculous that no one is expecting new hardware today as WWDC is a software/developer conference.

As for the WWDC keynote, I'm excited, but I'm not sure what I'm excited about. I mean, I'll definitely use Lion, iOS 5, and probably iCloud (we'll see), but I don't really know what about them is getting me excited currently. Oh well, only an hour left till it starts.

About iCloud - obviously there is much more to it than what we are reading about right now. Apple wouldn't spend $1 Billion on the data center, nor would it pay 3 labels $150 million for the rights for a service if it means no one would use it. There is something up their sleeve, which they obviously believe in....just wait :)

Most excited (and potentially disappointed) about iCloud. I hope for my home folder (or at least the iTunes and iPhone libraries) in the cloud, and really really hope it's just not another music streaming service (I don't like Spotify, nor Wimp).

In other news:

"Simfy files antitrust complaint against Apple in Germany

German company Simfy has filed an anti-trust complaint against Apple with Germany’s competition authority, The Bundeskartellamt.

Simfy, a music streaming service similar to Spotify, is currently only available in the German, Swiss and Austrian markets.

Simfy claims Apple is purposely holding back the approval of their iPad app as they prepare to announce their own iCloud service. Apple has confirmed the announcement of their iCloud service today at the 2011 Worldwide Developers Conference, but has not yet revealed what the service will provide or how it will work.

Ciaran O’Leary, a Simfy investor, claims they have been notified that the app has reached the highest level of approval but has since stalled, and Apple has not responded to communication, including letters from their lawyers.

Apple’s decision to create a “closed” market for applications on their iOS devices drew some ire at its announcement, and at times their criteria for approving or rejecting apps has appeared to be whimsical.

In this case, they have seemingly prevented a competitor (albeit a small-scale one) from entering a comparable product into the market before the announcement of their own. Simfy already has an iPhone app out (as does Spotify), but getting their iPad app to market first would be a significant coup for the German startup."

Do those planning on watching the live(?) delayed feed at CNN realize that the player is Flash player? Better be at your Macs & Windows machines; it's looks like the iDevices won't be watching via CNN.

By the way, it ran a video commercial in Flash and it took only 13% of the CPU and Safari did not crash (as usual). It would be so nice if iDevice users could at least choose to burn their own batteries, risk crashing their own Safari app, etc. (but that's another 1000-threads argument already completely beaten to death).

Main point: if you're planning on watching at CNN at 1:30ET, you better get to a device that can (and/or is permitted by Apple almighty to) run Flash.
