That's right guys, we finally have it, just released yesterday...totally from out of nowhere!

Incase no one knows what this is, Enemy Territory is a FREE FULL version of Return to Castle Wolfenstein...well I hope most of you have heard of this fantastic game!!

Here is the release announcement:
SplashDamage (http://splashdamage.com/) (scroll down, page doesn't seem to be mac friendly...

The DL at their downloads page didn't seem to be working, but a simple look in the forums gives other places to get it...
SD forum... (http://splashdamage.com/index.php?name=pnPHPbb2&file=viewtopic&t=11516&sid=cd66cef6ce1c6c59af9988d32512d756)

I'm a very happy guy...

You need RTCW already and this is just a mod, right?

Nope...it's a full game...

Wait - "free"? As in, "nothing in life is free"? "Here you go, don't worry about it, it's on me" free?

You know, I'm so unused to seeing that word, I'm not even sure if I spelled it right...

Enemy Territory is a stand alone multiplayer game and it's completely FREE.

I can confirm that it works without RTCW.

Not that well on my Dual 1 Ghz, 9000 pro (64 meg) though.

Call of Duty puts it in its place.

another mirror: http://files.filefront.com/Enemy_Territory_Full_Mac_Install_v260/;3830839;;/fileinfo.html

Filefront servers are free, no registration required, little of no wait, and fast.

I wasn't so lucky with ET install. First all the files and folders were locked after I installed the game. After that, I tried to start the game and got an error saying: default.cfg could not be found." to fix that problem I copied the default.cfg from CoD to Et finally got to play.

When I play, I get a lot of choppiness. My frames will sometimes drop down in the single digits. I lowered my graphics settings and still got the same thing. I will try a different server later and see if still happens.

Yeah, same. Is it default.cfg? Just out of interest, do you run Norton antivirus software?

OK, what you've gotta do is download the file wolfet_2.60.dmg rather than Wolfenstein Enemy Territory 2.60.dmg so find a mirror with this first link rather than the second. If you downloaded the second link, I'm pretty sure it'll never work so you've just gotta re-download it.

BTW, I've been playing this a little and my ping is undeniably great but it is soooooo choppy it's not funny. If I didn't have the bandwidth advantage over the others, I wouldn't be able to play AT ALL! Otherwise, it's the greatest game ever and full kudos to the guy who ported it. :)

for all those having trouble with default.cfg just open TextEdit and save a blank file as default.cfg in WT's etmain folder. You first have to save is as a .RTF file then you can change the extention. Make sure you check to see if the folder is unlocked, mine wasn't.

I managed to get a working copy going. This game is awsome, has to be the best free game released ever. 2 questions...
1) Are there any patches/updates that i should get?
2) Are there any mods for this game yet? If so, where could i get them?

Meh. Not too impressed. It feels like Quake with a WWII mod. Good for a free game though.

I turned my settings "fastest" on my iMac G4 (800 MHz, GeForce4MX, 768 MB of RAM). The default settings were a bit choppy. I need to tweak it some more. It's running over 30 FPS in firefights and what have you, so turning up a things is possible.

I only played for about 20 minutes, so I didn't get to mess with the settings.

I think the folks at Macologist are working on converting some mods. Wait for them.

1. Since this is the first release of ET for Mac, there is no patches yet.
2. http://returntocastlewolfenstein.filefront.com/ has some mods and stuff. You could also check out http://www.fileplanet.com for stuff.

Well in my opinion, it's one of the best, immersive FPS multigames out there...not much else you can compare it too...even the newest multi games for the pc. If you are a FPS fan, and like REAL teamplay, this is hands down the best out there. Almost all other FPS multi games don't have that real "team" feeling, or specific roles or duties per class/person.

Besides, we are on macs here....so I'm not going to go as far as to say "meh, not too impressed" I'm impressed with everything ;)

Has anyone else got the problem of having a static mouse curser (the normal one, not the Wolfenstein one) on their screen? It doesn't do anything, but it's pretty annoying. Also, does anyone know what changes to make to enable this to run as smoothly as possible. I'm only on an 800MHz G4 iBook so it's as jolty as possible. I've set the something to 'fastest' but is there anything else I can do?

I'm gonna have to play ET again sometime during my spring break, but I have a few problems:

- The cross-hairs don't widen or narrow to show accuracy. For whatever reason, the cross-hairs do widen randomly at times just when I'm walking... In fact, when people are shooting me, it never felt like a few bullets were off their target. I had a mobile MG42 and my opponent was really far away, but managed to nail me with his Thompson... I only saw like one or two rounds fly off to the side, but that was it.
- For whatever reason, I keep running into servers where I'm downloading probably over 100 MB of files! Mods, probably?
- Well, even though people say it's really a team game, I find a lack of communication and teamwork. Halo was probably the most team-based game I've played to date. I never found a medic that would help me even when it was clear in ET. Then again, that was based on one server, so maybe I should hold on that comment. It seemed like the only strategy I saw was gather a group and charge.
- I wouldn't call this comparable to CoD at all. CoD allowed you to use ironsights, which was nice and slightly more realistic. It's a nice touch that's a plus in any game, but it's not a problem if there's ironsights. I just think it's more like MoH:AA because of how accurate your weapons are.
- And no melee attack! I'm man that needs his melee attack. It's a real plus for any game, so I don't expect everything game to have that, but... Melee attacks have saved my life so many times. And it's better than having you and your opponent pretty much stabbing the nozzle of your gun at each other and blasting away.

Just my peeves and thoughts. I still think it's a fine game, but I haven't had too much of a good experience (yet, I hope).

ScottDodson
Mar 25, 2005, 03:38 PM
Well I did have the problem with the cursor for a bit, but I found that it only happened after I reset my vid settings. A couple things worked for me though...

1. go into the console (~ key) and then type "/vid_restart" and hit enter. That worked for me...

2. Try going into windowed mode by hitting "apple H" and move that cursor to a corner of a screen, then "apple H" again. That is a cheap and generic fix :-\

And for the people looking for a FPS boost...there are a couple things you can do...

Under System settings...obviously put everything to low, disable dynamic lights, only use bilinear filtering, and a big one I find no one does...put sound quality to low (11khz).

Under View settings...Ejecting Brass off, low quality sky yes, particles no, wall mark lifetime off, blood flash none, blood splatter none.

most of you guys probably already could figure that you would get a better framerate from doing that...but just helping the newer guys out. Those are just basic settings but I'm going to try to put together a .cfg for a bunch of the hidden settings not available in menu's.

hope it helps a little

Thats what i meant. The graphics can be set to a bunch of different settings, i think one of them is normal. It should help with the choppiness.

Meh, I downloaded it and I joined a server. The server downloaded a file for me then dissconnected. This file wouldn't let join any other servers. So I unistalled it and I really had no intrest in installing it again to tell the truth. Besides, after playing Call of Duty I have doubts it will impress me. That's the problem with buying great games like Call of Duty: other game just aren't as impressive.

Remove the Divx plugin in your /Library/QuickTime folder. There's a bug with the plug-in that makes the mouse cursor show in a number of games. I use mplayer or VLC to play Divx content.

The file I downloaded was "wolfet_2.60.dmg" and I can't get it working. :(

I was getting the config error, so I put in a blank file, but when it launches, I'm greeted with an orange screen.

It appears to be a console window, as typing "quit" will quit the game.

I'm trying to run it on a 17" Rev.D Powerbook.

Edit: I'm now downloading from the SplashDamage site; the filename is "Wolfenstein Enemy Territory 2.60-2.dmg" so I wonder if the -2 on the end means there's been a minor update to the file?

Update: the file from the official site works perfectly. :)

Had to set a custom resolution in the config file myself to play at this screen's native resolution (1440x900) and I found that a FOV of 100 seemed to be the best. (had the most distortion I could tolerate; the site I saw recommended 115)

I sincerely wish i could agree with you. I felt TFC [half-life mod] back some 5-6 years ago] was far better and was reminded of it immediately. It had the co-operative and class aspects of ET [engineers' emplaced guns were too crazy], equivalent graphics, better combat, damn it was fun. the distinguishing features of ET were all present in TFC -mines, disguises, carnage..but to my mind were done better in the latter. i think the reality of it is that if the game had been good enough to sell they would have sold it. its way down there at the bottom of my list of best FPSs even for the mac. [scott/anyone if you have access to a pc try TFC and see how you feel...personally i can't think of a game that made me laugh more than TFC for it's sheer collaborative chaos].

From what I've learned on this site (http://enemy-territory.4players.de:1041/index.php) ET is a mod of Quake3, so Q3 console commands should work for tweaking it. Note that the technical FAQ's on the site are windows oriented. It's not bad for a free game, but I agree with the above poster that Team Fortress and Day of Defeat are 'better' games.

Hi everyone!

Just got my 12" Pb a few days ago and I'm VERY pleased with it ;)
I have a 19" external CRT monitor, and when I've first ran ET it asked me that I want to play on the external monitor or on the LCD screen. But later I've detached my external monitor and played it on the pb's screen, and now I don't know how to tell it to run on the external monitor again
And i was very surprised that it rans kinda choppy on my 1.5 Ghz 12" Pb... Is this normal or I'm missing something... ? (I've played it with energy saving options set to highest perfomance)
My last question is, where the hack can I find the tilde button on this PB keyboard to access the console? :)
Thanks in advance ;)

It's sooooo good to finally have a mac ;)

Bye,

Giotto

I'm convinced that people are cheating even on punkbuster servers. It's not
physically possible for a strafing opponent far in the distance to nail you with almost every shot of a Thompson within the space of a couple seconds while you yourself are moving. Either they are cheating or have some special hardware setup or legal in-game advantage.

I think some of them have circumvented punkbuster and have some type of auto-aim enabled.

TDM21
Apr 2, 2005, 10:20 AM
I do not think the game calculates inaccuracy from shooting. Remember the game is pretty much Quake3 with a few modifications to the engine. If you played Q3 any you know you can do some unrealistic stuff: like railgun somebody who hit a jump pad while they are all the way across the map, plus you are running on a ramp. Crazy stuff does happen.

ScottDodson
Apr 2, 2005, 02:09 PM
Well before you jump to conclusions that people are "cheating"...I've been in the RTCW community for years now, and you'd be surprised just how good people are. I have been accused of cheating more times than I can count (I've even got some fake "aimbot" scripts bound to some keys for when people accuse me of cheating...just to get their goat even more ;) )

But the fact is...it IS possible to hit people from rediculous lengths while strafing. If you play a game on the same engine for a few years, you get used to EVERY little detail of aiming, movement, and enemy prediction. Plus, many of the ET players (the good ones) are coming from RTCW. RTCW is a much faster paced game, and if you get control over that game, and move to ET...your skill seems to multiply.

I'm just trying to shed some light to the new ET players out there, especially on a mac. I play on my old quicksilver on a 15inch monitor...not pro gaming specs at all...but I've played RTCW forever, and ET now since launch...and if I can own with those specs, it's scary to think of the potential "maxed" out PC on a huge monitor.

If you think those ET guys are cheating...do a quick search for some old Quake III or RTCW tournament videos...now that is some sick stuff...and no cheats there.

Have been playing ET for a couple of weeks now. Have had a few probs with frame-rate now and then. Usually best to disconnect and try a server with less players taking up band width. Graphics set to best my emac can handle (just a case of trying each setting 'til you're happy). Have gripe with pumping full magazine into enemy who then kills me with one or two shots (not very fair), but on the whole this game kicks *ss.
Having played the cheating swine on Halo. ET is a vast improvement.

Anyway... what I am wondering is, how do you play music during the 'after-game' limbo screen?
Is it simple, or do I need something extra??

The game does not seem to work well with my aspect ration and I have a low FPS. The game displays in the top left corner of my screen.

Any way to configure it to play full-screen without stretching at native resolution? Or at least, to have it centered?

What are the ideal settings for my mini? (Textures, Sound, resolution, etc...)

well, for your mini I dunno if it could push it full screen, at least with settings put to low. But here are a few suggestions for you that may help you along the way...

First, your settings are really a testing game...testing to see what works best. I usually *start* with my standard resolution (I know yours is an *odd* res, I'll get to that in a second)...and tweak from there. In other words, I start at 1024/768 with all settings at low, and work my way up from there. It's usually always better to play the game in native resolution...than dumbing it down, not only visually, but also it will run smoother no matter what your other settings (typically) are. Also you will want to go into your other view settings, turn off things like corona distance, particles, etc. and again work up from there, tweaking and gradually boosting settins as you go along. Also I made a previous post about changing your sound to 11 from 22...seems to add quite a boost in FPS.

I'm assuming it should run fine on your mini, since I can usually get around 30-40 in crowded and 80+ in confined areas, and I'm running a poop 867/ati9000 ;)

Hopefully after some tweaking you can find your sweet spot...

Next, with your *smaller* window in your corner of your screen...there are two things to note. Apple + H will switch between fullscreen, and windowed mode, so try that...if that doesn't boost you to full screen, there are other options. While in windowed mode, hit Apple + M, that should give you mouse control to grab the window, and move it to wherever you want. Do both those in game...I typically (if I'm chatting or surfing while playing...yeah, I'm weird) Hit the apple/h and then apple/m to move my window around, or throw in a few apple/tabs in there as well to switch. Anyway, those may help you to move your window to a better view.

And now to the resolution problem. Is your resolution not available in the system options? I don't go that high, so I don't know. If it doesn't, and you are forced to stretch, check out these commands you can put into the console.

go into console: ~
then enter these two commands after each other:

/seta r_customwidth "1680"
/seta r_customheight "1050"

I hope this helps you a little bit...if you are still having problems, take some screen grabs, or let me know what does/doesn't work.

Also, (sorry for the double...no, triple post today) check this site out. It's a config builder, and it also may help boost some fps for you, by changing things that you can't through a menu. Look through it, and see what could and couldn't help, there is a brief description of what each does.

Just a couple warnings:
always save a backup config if you have one you like. You can always delete one and start over...but just easier to make a copy of your original.

There are some settings that PB may boot you for (I think), so you may need to pop into the forum on that site for further help on what to change, and what people think is the best config. I don't mess with that stuff, since I'm happy with my settings the way they are, so I don't know what each and everyone does. But this seems like an easy way to do some tweaking...

good luck, and if anyone tries this out, let me know how it works.

(the only one I HAVE changed...manually...is the atmospheric effects, which seems to be the most popular. Maps with snow and rain bog the crap out of my system, and it helps a bunch to turn them off)

getting there. Thanks for all the info. I can'T seem to find the right config file to modify. Do I have to create one in /etmain (named autoexec.cfg?) or do I have to use the blank one in /library/preferences?

I tried saving a autoexec.cfg file in /etmain containing only the command: seta r_mode "1680x1050"

But it made the game crash at startup. Modifying the one in preferences doesn'T seem to do anything.

I find all this very instructive.

Alright, well here are a couple more things to maybe give you a little insight on using the .cfg's.

The one you want to modify is the etmain.cfg. in your etmain folder, put all your changes in there, and you should be right as rain. OR, you can put your changes in a cfg that you create yourself. Use Textedit, place your commands in there, name it whatever you want (I'll use "custom" for the example)...and save it. After it's saved, put the extension .cfg on it, and it should work fine. Then when you get into a game, or the main screen go into the console, and type in:

/exec custom.cfg

One thing I see I forgot is this...after you make any changes in the console, especially your resolution changes, you will need to restart the video *from* the console...

you can do that by doing the command:

/vid_restart

so after you do your res. changes, or execute your custom cfg in the console, the changes won't take place until you restart your video.

if this is confusing let me know, I'll see if I can flesh it out better, or copy paste an example .cfg to help you along.

i get an invalid checksum error? wtf?

I'm getting the same problem here. Only my 2nd day with my new MAc and have been dying to try ET on this thing. I have done the following:

1) Downloaded the dmg from original ET site several times (my ISP is gonna love me!)
2) Also tried using an image from the mirror in this thread
3) Repaired permissions on my HD (just in case)

I STILL get invalid checksum error when I try and open up the image. Any help is very much appreciated, and I promise I'll go easy on you if we meet in the game ;)

cheers

Enemy Territory always quits on me a couple of minutes into each game, this time before it quits is variable sometimes it will can be less than a minute to 15-20mins. The screen freezes and the sound skips (ie repeats the same noise). Then it quits back to the desktop with no reason given.

Any ideas?

This is so wierd guys,
No matter how I try I simply can't enter DOOM 3's Console mode.
What am I doing wrong?

All I know is that I get the tilde symbol by hitting Alt + ¨

I would really appreciate if someone helped me out here since I have a few
important comand lines etc. I want to launch via console mode to see if I can tweak the game into a playable fashion on my computer.

I'm running a 12" PB G4, Mac OSX Tiger intalled to it. (Swedish keyboard)
1.5Ghz proccessor, 768 Mb RAM, GeeForce Go5200 64Mb, 80Gb Hard drive, superdrive.

Any tricks, tips and full .cfg tweaking on how to stop the game from lagging when I'm passing through doors and ESPECIALLY shooting monsters would be extremly appreciated to.

Regards,

Wes

I can't help specifically because I don't have D3 but according to http://www.viperlair.com/articles/howto/software/tweakd3/

Where is the console?

The console can be accessed by pressing CTRL-ALT-x where 'x' is the key under ESC, tilde for many, ` hyphen for others, it all depends on your region. You can however set this to the key under ESC only by adding the line -

set com_allowConsole "1" to your autoexec.cfg.

A whole lot of thanks, bro!
Sad thing is that the lagging in firefights still occur despite
heavy tweaking on the graphics, though.

I honestly believed that a Geeforce Go5200 64Mb VRAM card
would handle the game if proper settings were implemented in the
.cfg list and so on. Guess not...

ET is online only. From what I remember, you press L to bring up the menu to change teams / capabilities (soldier, medic, covert ops, etc). I don't have it installed right now, so I can't confirm it is L. It just kind of becomes automatic after a while....

ok cause i felt rele stupid i pressed escape and figured there would be a menu option like in quake III "start" then you choose like "join blue" or "join red" because wolfenstein was made by the people who did quake III. i havn't tried "L" yet but i will now and will re-post if it does(n't) work
