Tried doing this with Golden Records, but got only high frequency white noise. Any suggestions.

PS. Keep it simple, cause I'm stupid.

Simple? Use Garage band to record. It's already on your Mac.

But what is most important to ripping vinyl is the quality of the turntable, pickup and your preamp on of cource cleaning the LPs first. Connect the turn table to your amp and make sure you use the phono input. Then run the amp's line out or Tape Monitor to your computer's audio interface.

Thanks for your reply Chris.

Tried Garageband as suggested but was unable to obtain sound.
(Checked the input mike.)

Then tthere are two possable causes

1) You don't know how to use Garage band or,
2) You have some broken hardware.

Not to insult you but I think #1 is the more likely. That's OK because most people don't know how to use it. You can fix that problem by watching tutorial videos
http://www.nonlineareducating.com/tutorial/garageband09101

Buy a three day subscription for $1. You can watch the entire video in one weekend for a buck.

You're right Chris, I don't know how to use garage band. No offense taken.
I did, however, follow a youtube tute which got me through the steps, but had no sound at the end.

I will try further later. The computer needs to go in for a service tomorrow. It's been doing some funny things lately.

Jim.
