View Full Version : Email account concerns with iCloud?

So are any of you guys concerned about the apple's latest attempt at the cloud services.

What I'm saying is we've had email address @mac which was free, then mobileme, which was paid and they were (are?) pushing users away from @mac to @me. Now with icloud its conceivable but not verified that we'll be using @icloud instead of @me for an email address (I'm sure @me will work for the foreseeable future)

I'm not worried about the technical aspect but apple's business strategy. Given how much work it is for people to change email addresses now a days, we have to trust that apple will continue the service and not change the email addr but we're facing a possible 3rd change.

To be fair, I'm still on @mac.com but clearly apple was pushing us to the @me usage up until the iCloud service was unveiled.

Since apple's track record for this stuff isn't great, I'm a little concerned about the long term viability of @icloud especially if it doesn't take off. They really marketed mobileme when it first came out and it failed to take off, at least it did not meet Jobs expectations. What happens if iCloud doesn't meet their expectations. Do we see a reboot in the service in a couple of years? Do we find ourselves with yet a new buzzword type email address to deal with?

I would be surprised if they didn't offer some kind of forwarding service if they actually force @mac and @me addresses to adopt whatever new domain they decide on.

If you're actually concerned about it, use GMail. 7 years of uninterrupted service.

I'm sure they will for a time, what that time frame is exactly is anybodies guess. Given that they're still allowing .mac provides a level of comfort for iCloud.

I guess my point is that for emails and other type services, stability is the name of the game but apple's offering has been anything but stable, in terms of naming. .mac -> .me -> icloud. Any service, person, company that relied on that had change 2x and now a third time. There in lies my concern.

They have already said that people who sign up to iCloud will get a @me.com email address and that existing @me.com and @mac.com addresses will continue to work.

According to an e-mail Apple sent out on Monday, when you sign up for iCloud, you’ll be able to keep your MobileMe e-mail address. In addition, everyone eligible for iCloud is now eligible for a free e-mail address ending in @me.com. (http://www.macworld.co.uk/digitallifestyle/news/index.cfm?newsid=3284823&pagtype=allchandate)

...which is why I would not even consider using an Apple service for something like e-mail. The track record speaks for itself.

I seem to be at that point now. .mac was cool back in the day because I was younger, email wasn't as mature and we also rely on it so much in this day and age.

Last month when I had the email glitch, that spooked me and I'm much more concerned about keeping my emails safe. I'm also worried about apple's long term vision to stick with icloud. I'm not entirely sold that they'll not revamp it in a couple of years to make it more magical.

I'll not give up on icloud but I think I'll rely on a different solution for my main email account.

It would be nice to believe that after remaining loyal and paying the tarrif for what was a great idea, but a failed execution, that Apple could be trusted this time.

Unfortunately I just don't see it happening however. For a successful company like Apple to leave us guessing is unacceptable. They can post all kinds of self promotion on their site, but no FAQ for us? that speaks volumes.

Im going to change to Gmail immediately. No wonder Apples at war with Google, Jobs has got to be jealous that they can do what he can't.

With an @mac account you feel like you get pushed towards using @me? I feel it's the other way round. I signed up for @mac the day before MobileMe launched because I assumed a lot of new 3Gs users would sign up and may take my address, and to this day some things don't like me using @me, and try to force me to use @mac...

If you buy an iPad, or the iPad. you cannot easily use .mac as the email address but rather the .me. There's a work around to allow this is evidence of apple trying to move people off .mac.

They fixed that in 4.3 so you can now set up a @mac.com address without a work around.

I have been using @mac and then @me since 2008 -- haven't had one problem with email or switching from @mac to @me.

That's great news, when I got my iPad 4.3 wasn't out and I had to employ that work around. Its nice to see that they fixed it.

I wonder how many of the @mac account holders still use @mac and how many have migrated over to @me.

can I get an @me email address now? do I really need it or can I just stick to my normal email adress which is my apple id anyway?

Not yet. They have closed MobileMe to existing members so you'll have to wait iCloud launches.

Thanks, doesn't icloud work with our apple id anyway? I don't need a @me email to sync apps across devices.
