Pre-Tiger H.264????

According to this, the current update for Handbrake includes H.264 encoding????? I thought we wouldn't be seeing this until the new Quicktime and Tiger. Is this actually H.264, or is it just a scummy imposter? Also, If you import as an H.264 and it truly is H.264, Shouldn't you be able to shrink a DVDV down to about 100mb at full quality?

Apple didn't invent h.264, it's completely conceivable that they wouldn't be the first to bring it to the market. However, h.264 is a complicated codec, so just because some little app has h.264 doesn't necessarily mean it's an especially good implementation.

Handbrake is a respectable app. Just because apple isn't coming out with it first doesn't mean that it's not real :rolleyes:

Sounds like this thread need s to google H.264, a.k.a mpeg4 part 10. You get the same picture quality at around 30% less bandwidth (size) compared to mpeg4, a.k.a. mpeg4 part 3. The downside is it takes about 50% more processing power to get the same encoding time (or about 50% longer with the same processing power). Of course, these are all estimates and will vary with the source video and the compression profile (options) you invoke. All this is a generalization to suit the audience, so those that want to nit about details and otherwise be pedantic, be my guest.
