Since the release of first iOS 5 Beta (http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/) last week, people have been diligently documenting all the new features Apple has introduced in the upcoming version. Apple claims over 200 new features have been added, but have only spelled out a fraction of those. On our iPhone/iOS Blog (http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/) we've already covered some of the biggest changes. These include:

• iOS 5 Streams Track/Artist Information to Bluetooth Audio Devices (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/09/ios-5-streams-trackartist-information-to-bluetooth-audio-devices/)
• Multiple Routes Supported in iOS 5 Google Maps (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/09/multiple-routes-supported-in-ios-5-google-maps/)
• iOS 5 Brings Improvements to Weather App (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/09/ios-5-brings-improvements-to-weather-app/)
• iOS 5 Includes Airport and Time Capsule Setup Software (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/09/ios-5-includes-airport-and-time-capsule-setup-software/)
• iOS 5 Allows You to Tap Out Custom Vibration Patterns (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/08/ios-5-allows-you-to-tap-out-custom-vibration-patterns/)
• Screenshot of iOS 5's New iPad Music App (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/07/screenshot-of-ios-5s-new-ipad-music-app/)
• Demo of iPad's AirPlay Mirroring in iOS 5 (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/07/demo-of-ipads-airplay-mirroring-in-ios-5/)

MacRumors forum user hellomoto4 has compiled a longer list (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1165140) with screenshots of many of the new findings, such as:

http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2011/06/318057560-500x333.jpg

The most complete list of changes we've seen, however, is from forum user benna who has compiled 153 changes/features (http://www.ieatapples.com/ios5/) as of this writing. There are some duplicates and only a few screenshots, but it's the most exhaustive list we've seen. Here are some excerpts of some of the more interesting changes:- You can choose what applications to be included in Notifications Center
- Ability to Set Left or Right for Mono Audio
- You can create additional @me.com email address within the Mail settings
- New Private Browsing option in Safari
- Set custom text tone for each contact.
- You can use your phone while its being synced with iTunes.
- Multitasking Gestures in iPad. Use four or five fingers, swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar, pinch to return to the Home screen, and swipe left or right to switch between apps.
- Camera, use two-finger spread/pinch gesture to zoom in/out accordingly (Thanks @Alan)
- When your alarm goes off you can snooze it from lockscreen or slide to turn off
- Ability to set maximum messages downloaded through email to 1000 instead of 250
- Links can be opened in the backgroundiOS 5 is presently in developer beta release and will be released to the public in the fall of this year.

I have a feeling that Apple is purposely holding back on some big new iOS 5 features for the unveiling of the next iPhone, like Nuance speech recognition, etc.

If the hardware will be largely similar to the iPhone 4, they will need some new "wow moments" for the keynote, and I don't believe for a second that the 10 new features they focused on at WWDC are the only crown jewels of the new OS.

I hate Apple's use of the word custom sometimes.... when they say custom text tone per contact do they mean a user created text tone or a different tone per contact???

Please be the former 'cos i am sick to death of the standard sms tones that apple has given us, event he new ones on the iphone 4 suck.

I guess I am confused by the word "custom". I can go into my contacts and select a different text tone from my default one for my contacts. But if they mean, "custom" as in their "Tone Store" then yeah, I guess that makes sense.

Not sure if it's been answered but my biggest concern with iOS 5 is when they said that when you use iMessage you will be able to start a conversation on one iOS device and pick it up on the other. That's fine and good but what if you share your iTunes account with a family member or loved one? It seems that it sort of kills account sharing within a family (unless I'm missing something).

All you stuff is stored in a iTunes Library file. Upgrading to a new version of iTunes will (beta or production) will not destroy that file. And betas usually come out every 2 weeks.

Interesting - thanks for answering!

Just to clarify - you will be able to set your iMessage to your brothers iTunes account but have the App Store/iTunes Store account to yours? Apologies if that's confusing

Essentially I'm making sure that the iMessage account could remain independent of the account that's tied to that devices App Store account

Great question, similar to mine. Apple says you can take a pic out of the cloud gallery (or whatever it's called) and put it in one of your folders. So if you take a pic on iPhone it then also shares it to the cloud. At which point you can go to iPad and save that photo from the cloud gallery to a folder on iPad. 1st question: ANY folder or just the main folder? 2nd question, if I save that picture to a folder on my iPad, will that same picture then be saved to the same folder on my other devices? Or will I have to go into each device and copy that picture from the cloud to another folder?

Apple does have a habit of being vague on their changelogs, though.

I followed the link and read the article on ieatapples.

I was amused by the part where it talked about how developers are "pissed" at the reminders and camera apps. It pretty much falls into the "competition is good!" category. If they want to keep their apps alive, they need to update their apps with new ideas. Did they think they'd be able to come up with something and just coast on the idea for years? Development isn't a cakewalk, and people who treat it like such, or who got on board thinking they'd be able to make a quick buck, should fall to the wayside and make room for more committed developers.

I admire the guy from instapaper. at first, he was upset that apple duplicated his functionality. Then he basically said "well. Time to start coming up with some new updates and new functionalities." He will do fine because he'll always look to stay ahead of the curve, and those are the developers that are worth buying from.

Does anybody know if Events in the Photo app on the iPad can be arranged by name in iOS 5? Right now they are arranged by date. In iPhoto, they can be arranged by name, date or manually. I was hoping iOS 5 would add this ability to the iPad. Thanks.

Pretty sure that was possible in 4.3

Not sure if it's the same but I know that whatever notes I create in the notepad app on either device, show up on both devices, as long as both are connected via wifi.

I can't see it on the list, but may have missed it, can anyone point out to me the change/feature which means you can create new folders in the photo app and drag your individual images into different folders to organise them?
Thanks.

Oh yes, one other thing I really wanted, but not seen it mentioned, perhaps someone with ios5 can try it.

You know how you can now make folders on the desktop by dragging an icon over another icon. Then it creates a folder.

Well, can you now do the same again inside the folder to create a sub folder?

I've wanted sub folders from the 1st moment we had folders, as Apple limit the number of icons a folder can contain, we really need just 1 level of subfolders.

I've not seen anyone mention this yet.

I doubt it, what sort of changes are you looking for? No sarcasm, just curious.

Also if Apple is going to stick with Google for maps, I'd love to see turn by turn but I don't see that happening as it puts navigon, tom tom, etc...out.

I totally agree with you. With hundreds of thousands of apps on the App Store, every new feature is bound to eliminate some redundant apps. Many features like camera editing features come on other platforms built-in so those pissed off devs should be happy they got some money while it lasted.

Agreed. When you provide things that are "add-ons" or enhancements to the OS or an application, you're always at risk of being made obsolete. Even true for my company who has had several "big features" in our software outdated by updates to the software we plug into.

They should not be pissed... they should have seen it coming.

I know I was using it on my 3G which I never updated to iOS4
pandora = no static, less commercials, BETTER radio becuase its music you like.

Really?

If it's local stuff I like, including the DJs, then no, Pandora is NOT better radio because it doesn't have (necessarily) the music I like or the hosts.

Especially since last I heard, Congress decided to go with the RIAA for how to charge online Radio stations (could be mistaken, I'll admit, but last I heard they got rid of the "whichever is cheaper" option.) so they choose not to stream online.

Surprised no one mentioned how Apple killed off the "popover" menu in portrait Mail (on iPad). When you tap inbox now, it slides a new pane into view that remains there until you slide it out of view. Much better than before.

They didn't "kill" the popover menu. It still comes up, they just added the slide in from the left option.

When you are playing music via the iPod and you triple click the home button and swipe left to bring up the controls, the song and artist information scrolls at the bottom of the screen.

I think you meant "double click"

I noticed "New Voice in Voice Control" in the list, does anybody now what he's talking about?

Right. Because Apple has a long history of caring whether they put third party developers .... out. </sarcasm>

You need your eyes checked. That's not a list of all 200 changes.

You asked for a definitive list, not a comprehensive, complete, or exhaustive one. Enough room for interpretation that there's no need to be a complete jerk about it.

Also, i was gonna let it slide, but since you opened the door... I would think that a giant codpiece like you would know how to properly use the term "begging the question."

It's been confirmed that Apple is using Google's maps for iOS 5. I'm pretty sure that turn-by-turn has been available on the Android phones for awhile now? And IMO Apple isn't really too agitated about duplicating functionality provided by other apps; if they were, why did they introduce "deep integration" with Twitter, Facebook, pushing aside those apps?

Agreed but my next reasoning would more or less be the fact that Google would prefer to keep this functionality native to Android.

It only shows a timestamp if the minutes have changed. Personally, I like it that way.

I'm pretty sure it's more time than that, it seems to be if it assesses that the messages are part of the same combination. It's annoying if someone says meet you in an an hour, an hour ago, and you're wondering if they're arriving in 5 minutes or are ten minutes late, or whatnot...

I am a bit concerned about this feature:
When a notification is on the lockscreen, swipe it to open the specific app.
The purpose of a locked screen is to protect private information. Will someone more familiar please clarify? Is there a setting to keep the locked screen from being unlocked without a password?

The way I understand it, it will still ask for your pass code if you have set one. The only difference is that it will open directly into the relevant app.

Yes. Of course you can't bypass the lock screen just because you have a notification. And if you're very security conscious you can even decide which (if any) apps are permitted to put notifications on the lock screen.

Which is what the iPhone already does if you unlock it right after the notification comes up. (lock screen = keyboard lock, so if there's no PIN code, it open's straight up, and if there is a PIN code it'll just put the PIN code entry screen up in the normal way). People don't give Apple enough credit sometimes. Sure there have been ways to partially bypass the PIN code in small ways before, but nothing that obvious...

One thing I noticed today is that the SMS app now combines all of the pieces of long text messages into one message. Where before, a message over 160 characters would be displayed as separate messages with (1), (2), etc, now it is just a really long continuous message (with the bracketed numbers omitted).
I remember it doing this before for iPhone-to-iPhone messages, but now I can confirm that it does this for Blackberrys and probably other phones as well.

I have a feeling that Apple is purposely holding back on some big new iOS 5 features for the unveiling of the next iPhone, like Nuance speech recognition, etc.

If the hardware will be largely similar to the iPhone 4, they will need some new "wow moments" for the keynote, and I don't believe for a second that the 10 new features they focused on at WWDC are the only crown jewels of the new OS.

why hold back features? just to have something to offer later?

Is that a network issue? I've never had received SMS messages split up, from any network or any phone.
