create ipad/iphone accessory - where to start?

Have had a random idea today for a ipad /phone accessory - essentially involves using some sort of secure 'holder' and clamp

no dock carrying electrical current ect. so just a way to hold the pad / phone securely but easily taken away when not in use.

IM sure there are similar products, but have a different angle and application for it -

Where would i start? do i need a license from apple?
I guess buy the components (holder, clamp etc) and make a mock-up / prototype and get it patented / produced
