If I sign up for the iCloud @me address, am I able to change the ID name at a later date? I remember when creating an original mobileme account it would make a separate Apple ID that is not ever able to be changed but the account I made with my @gmail address is able to be altered. I'm referring to the username you log in with essentially.
If someone could check when they create an iCloud account and get an @me address if they can change the Apple ID through Apples webpage.

Slightly different question, if I have a @gmail Apple ID it looks like I can have an @me mail account tied to the SAME account with iCloud and not have it be a separate Apple ID. Can anyone confirm this?

no, you cannot change your apple id...its tied to your @me.com email. its like an umbrella id now.

so use the id you've bought everything with.

I cannot change my current @gmail ID after I link it to iCloud? Are you sure?

And about my second question, am I still able to sign up for a @me address without it creating a separate Apple ID?

Another issue discussed ad nauseam. MobileMe, iCloud and Mac names are their own accounts. You can't link them with another. Apple may have a "solution" to this but for now, it is what it is.

I asked Apple this exact question -

My question to Apple:

Hi! I had a gmail related Apple ID that I had for years. I had purchased many apps music, etc. I recently started a MobileMe account. I later realized that my MobileMe account is an Apple ID and I would like to merge the two accounts. I have tried the process as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1918, but I get a message saying that I can't change my Gmail Apple ID to a Mobile Me account because it is already an Apple ID. I tried through the web interface to manage my Apple ID, and same message. I would like to use my MobileMe account as my Apple ID without losing all my apps, music, etc. that I've purchased through my old Gmail Apple ID.

tl;dr I had a gmail Apple ID, now have MobileMe Apple ID; want to merge my gmail Apple ID and my purchases/credits to my MobileMe Apple ID.

Thanks,
Dimmick

Apple's Reply:

Dear Dimmick,

Hi. My name is Mike and I'm with iTunes Store Customer Support team in Charlotte, North Carolina. I'm glad to hear you recently got a MobileMe account, and I understand you'd like to merge your new MobileMe account and the gmail related Apple ID that you've had for years and that you have been unable to do so. Dimmick, as an avid iTunes customer myself, I regret to hear about this inconvenience. I know this has been less than ideal for you and I will be glad to assist you with this concern for you today.

Dimmick, it is not possible to merge or convert your iTunes account with or to your MobileMe Account as both are two independent Apple IDs. Each Apple ID must be unique.

If you create a new iTunes Store account with the MobileMe ID as the account's email address, it will be separate from your current iTunes Store account. They will have separate purchase histories, and you won't be able to transfer purchases or the store credits from one account to another. (Emphasis mine)

I want your iTunes Store experience to be as enjoyable as possible, so if you have any questions, concerns, or need any additional assistance with this matter, please don't hesitate to reply to this email.

Thank you for being an iTunes Store customer. We appreciate your business.

Have a great day.

Sincerely,

Michael (Charlotte, NC)

There you go. They should have made this easier. I can still use the apps, and use the new ID, but when I update prior purchases that were made with Gmail, I have to use that Apple ID. New app updates purchased with @Me, I have to use that Apple ID. Lame.

For years I've had just one Apple ID. I use it for iTunes, MobileMe, and buying my Mac computers phones and accessories via Apples online store. I'm sure there are many more like me, which may be why some are confused.

Assuming it is a userid@me.com Apple ID I think you are in good shape once iCloud is release.
