Just got the iPhone 4 for Verizon, Is jailbreaking the way to go?

I'd recommend doing some research first into Cydia tweaks and applications. If you find nothing that interests you, then there is no reason to jailbreak.

Is this your first iPhone and or IOS device, if so i say wait a while, get to know the phone and the UI. During that time read about what JB can do for and what it takes to do it on the VIP4.
 
Jailbreaking is definitely better, but you should read though all the threads about it on here first. Also, check out iClarified and the Dev-Team websites.
 
I would jailbreak it asap and look for some awesome tweaks. My personal favorite is NoSpot. It gets rid of the search page completely as I never use it and I hate it when I scroll left.

NoBookmarks, 5 Icon Dock, FolderCloser, etc.

There are a lot of simple tweaks that way make your everyday usage better.
