hi all,

I have some footage that i recorded with FRAPS on a PC.
I put it on the MAC, i can play it with both VLC and Quicktime.

However, i cannot import it in Premiere CS5/After Effects CS5 nor can i import it in iMovie.

Any ideas? :(

What codec does the .avi file use?
You can analyse the .avi via QT Player and its Movie Inspector window (CMD+I) or the Information window in VLC Player via CMD+I.

Most probably it uses a codec not meant for editing, thus you should transcode the video into a format, using an editing codec, iMovie or AE or Pr do understand, like .mov (format) + Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC - codec) + Uncompressed for Sound via MPEG Streamclip.

Maybe this can help a bit, as it shows you how to use MPEG Streamclip to transcode a video to a format/codec iMovie (thus AE and Pr) does understand:

hey! thank you for your reply!

I now checked again, only the audio plays in QT and these informations is what i have:

FORMAT:
'FPS1', 1280 x 720, Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 44.100 kHz

in VLC the codec is empty.. do not have any info.

The AVI were recorded using FRAPS on Windows 7.
Than downloaded the files to my MBP and now trying to edit... however i guess im hitting some walls here..

in windows i dont have a problem..
i just import in premiere and its fine..
however, on mac... i dont have the same workflow.
my pc crashed, so i downloaded vids from HDD and wanted to edit on mac..
but i guess that wont be happening ?

on windows works fine
on mac, can be viewed using VLC
no video but sound on QT7, DIVX
no video, no sound on QT (it just say file type not supported)

cannot be imported in premiere.. says
codec missing or unavailable

I'm betting that you don't have Perian installed?

Okay, we're making progress.

I installed Perian

I am able to import them in Premiere, and open them with Quick Time (not QT7)
However, video is black, but i hear sound.
