I think the chances are high that you've never heard of my favorite artists:

Karsten Koch
B.E.A.S.T
Scirocco
Skaven
Purple Motion

These artists release their music in module format. I'd say compared to MP3, modules are oddballs. Unlike MP3, there's a huge variety of formats that fall under the module category. The four most common are MOD, S3M, XM and IT. If you want to download modules, click here (http://www.modarchive.com/). If you need a player, try this one (http://ximplemod.sourceforge.net/) or this one (http://cocomod.stalkingwolf.net/).

All I can listen to at the moment is the Jedi Mind Tricks but thanks to a pretty diverse collection on the iPod this is always changing. In fact, just as I'm typing this I'm reminded that I just went for a run to The RZA's Fatal from Blade III, a seriously inspiring song for anyone trying to get fit. ;)

Rush! :D

I LOVE RUSH; they never get any respect when they have clearly been one of the most experimental and best bands ever.

Well here goes a quick list:
AC/DC, Aerosmith, The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Bob Marley, The Cure, The Darkness, Guns N' Roses, Iron Maiden, Jet, Jimmy Buffett, Jimmy Hendrix, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, Marilyn Manson, Mötley Crüe, Ozzy, Queen, Rush, Velvet Revolver, White/Rob Zombie, ZZ Top, and a whole bunch of other great music from classical to other 70–80's (all coming from a 16 year old)

Currently I am listening to a lot of ska, intermixed with metal, alternative, and general rock. Here are my favorite bands I listen to often (party shuffle). I didn't include the CDs I purchased when I was in elementary school, such Kid Rock , or Smash Mouth, as I can't stand them now.

Ska:
Planet Smashers
MU330
Buck-o-Nine
Catch 22
Aquabats
Reel Big Fish
The Chinkees
Skankin' Pickle
Slapstick
Less than Jake
B. Lee Band
for slower days: Skatalites

Rock and all its sub-genres:
Tool - Aenima- just bought this the other day...can't get enough of it!
Perfect Circle
6gig
Pennywise
Primus
Rage Against the Machine
Audioslave
Mushroomhead
Taproot
Earth Crisis
BCDC (and ACDC as well)
Metallica
Foo Fighters
New Machine
The Pixies
Operation Ivy
311
Hed-PE
Sublime
Nickelback - Curb, The State, Silver Side Up--none of their new stuff
can't forget CSN-Y/CSN/Neil Young

Misc:
Illegal Substance
The Freestylers
Prodigy
Mike Park
Public Enemy

And the soundtracks to most downhill and freeride mountain bike videos, such as the Keep it Real series, all Thor Wixom videos, New world disorder...

Thin Lizzy
Iron Maiden
Anthrax

I have A LOT more.

Some excellent bands there! How about:

King's X
Voivod
Flotsam and Jetsam
Megadeth
The Flower Kings
Joe Satriani
Platypus
Galactic Cowboys
Opeth
The Mars Volta

man, I just love prog metal!

311
Dream Theater
John Petrucci (Dream Theater guitarist)
Liquid Tension Experiment
Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
Metallica
Megadeth
Coldplay
U2
Rammstein
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Pearl Jam (excluding all albums after Vitalogy)

I used to swear that Steve Morse was the greatest guitarist ever, but Petrucci is so freaking fast, clean, and powerful. He is perfect with DT. Just look at all of the bands trying to be just like them.

I have the Flotsam and Jetsam disc with Jason Newsted. That's the only one I have and I haven't listened to it in a while. I'm gonna rip it right now and give it another listen.

I've always been a Megadeth fan. The only album of there's that I'm not really into is 'Killing is my business..." I've heard a little bit of Opeth, but not a whole lot. I haven't heard any of the others you mentioned, except for Joe Satriani, but I haven't heard much of his stuff.

And yeah, prog kicks ass. I got into it first with Pink Floyd, then Dream Theater introduced me to the prog-metal thing. Then, I got into bands like Kansas, Yes, Genesis, Spock's Beard, etc.

EDIT: I ripped that Flotsam and Jetsam album, "Doomsday for the Deceiver" and it's just not my thing. Now I know why I hadn't listened to it in a long time.

Is their newer stuff any better??

Wow, Faust and The Residents. Still have fond memories of Eskimo and The Commercial Album.
For Halloween many years back, three friends and I rented tails and made our own eyeball heads, dressing up like the Residents for a party. I have a pic somewhere of us in a mall, where we ran into a guy dressed as Gene Simmons. Talk about musical diversity.

What about Henry Cow, Slappp Happy, Throbbing Gristle, Magma, Zamla Mammas Mama, Daevid Allen's Gong?

The only F&J disk I've ever heard is Drift. It is sans Newsted. I had heard less than complimentary things about the band, then was in a record shop one day and they were playing Drift. Stayed in the store long enough to hear the whole thing, then bought their store copy because they didn't have one in stock. It is a great CD, the track Smoked Out alone is worth the price of admission.

LOVE Weller. Also:

Marilyn Manson (you MUST see him/them live)

Three times, twice on the last tour. When they deployed their inflatable Mickey Manson head... Truly one of the most entertaining bands I've ever seen. He has amazing presence on stage. Some people might say it's like a train wreck, you just can't NOT look! :p

That's cool. I'll have to check it out. The 'Doomsday For The Deceiever" album reminded me too much of early Megadeth and even Slayer. Honestly, the only "thrash" that I like from that period that I've heard is Metallica.

Yeah, early Metallica is great. After the Black album (which was great in an altogether different way), those guys went straight downhill, IMHO.
I'm not much on thrash, generally. I must be too old for that stuff. Can't keep up.

I'm a huge fan of all Metallica, really. I like the Loads a lot. They are just VERY different. St. Anger is even more different, but is good in it's own way. (In my opinion, of course)

My favorite BY FAR is Master Of Puppets, though.

Past the fast paced heavy guitars and drums, there lies really deep and profound lyrics, like Helena, which is about his girlfriend that committed suicide.

I'm not saying that there isn't meaning to the songs, im just saying their outlet for that passion is very generic, and it is a turnoff to have a lead singer with a lousy voice. I used to be an Emo kid, just lately there has been such a rush of the same stuff over and over...I've found a nice comfort in more light-hearted genres lately: funk, indie-pop, even jazz like the great Miles Davis. It might also be that my musical taste has matured more also, since I am still in high school...

These are the artists I really love,

Fiona Apple
Tori Amos
The Cardigans
Xiu Xiu

I love them for the music they make, their artistic expression and the fact that their next cd won't sound as the previous. Altough sometimes difficult to understand and appreciate, but always musically and conceptually challenged. They don't stick with the same marketing target people like borah jones, or sucktallica, that's my opinion.

These are other artists I really like,
Ladytron, Beth Gibbons, Vive la fête, Stina Nordenstam, Kylie, Jill Tracy, Dani Siciliano, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kylie, Marianne Faithfull, The Pixies, Great Lake Swimmers, Fad Gadget, The Glimmer Twins (aka The Glimmers), Erlend Oye, Tiga, . Allison, Gorillaz, The Adult, Bangkok Impact, Zoot Woman, Radiohead, too many dj's, Plaid, Joy Division, Queen Adreena, Shea Seger, Ani Difranco, Lisa Germano, Björk, The Postal Service, Figurine, Anthony and the Johnsons, Neutral Milk Hotel, ...

And i could go on... :D

Y'know, gang, music WAS written and performed before ~1900.......I think I saw ONE mention of Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart in this thread (based on a quick skim). ;)

These lists are always tough. That said, stuff I'd take to a desert island:

Husker Du
Bob Mould
Sugar
REM
Joe Jackson
Ulrich Schnauss
Walter Holland
Terje Rypdal
Beethoven--Erich Kleiber's Fifth Symphony with the VPO (IMO, the single greatest piece of music ever composed.)
Bach-Brandenburg Concertos (OK, everything.)
Lassus-all.
Lou Reed
Velvet Underground
Shoot the Doctor
Strange Cave
Jethro Tull
Duke Ellington
Modern Jazz Quartet (particularly "In Memoriam" and "The Last Concert")
The Pursuit of Happiness
Lyle Lovett
Bill Frisell
Neil Young
Beethoven--3rd and 9th symphonies, Emperor, oh hell, EVERYTHING.
Philip Glass
Bela Fleck
Minutemen
The Goatmen
Dead Can Dance
Lush
Wilco
Uncle Tupelo
Son Volt
Dvorak-Cello Concerto in B Minor
Williams-Antarctica
Mark Isham-Pittsburgh 1901
Michael Manring--Welcoming

And on and on.....the perils of having a grandfather who taught piano!

But then there's(in no order):
Ozzy Osbourne
Van Halen
Keith Urban
The Wreckers
Sugarland
All That Remains
Rush
The Police
Fuel
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Kenny Chesney
The Audition
Fall Out Boy
Flyleaf
Metallica

There are a lot of other's with just two or three songs I like, but it seems kind of pointless to list them.

Which Pink Floyd era do you prefer?

I love it all to be honest, every album has something to say (yes even 'The Division Bell')...but I do prefer the 'Roger Waters' era. 'Wish You Were Here' is easily my favourite album. I could listen to that until the cows come home!

You know that since it's their 40th anniversary there's something special coming out? ‘OH BY THE WAY’ will be released at the end of the year with the entire back catalogue and some extras thrown in for good measure! Costs a fair few bits of folding paper though! ;)

You?

The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn is my favourite these days. The first one I bought, at the time it originally came out on vinyl, was Dark Side Of The Moon which I am still fond of. I also like Wish You Were Here a lot. Animals was the last one I bought - I didn't get on with The Wall at all.

God I must be old ...

I really like Ednaswap, Nirvana (and I feel obligated to point out that Nevermind is great, but not really "real" Nirvana), Red Hot Chili Peppers, Noe Venable, Tori Amos, Smashing Pumpkins, Silversun Pickups, and The Offspring. As well as some other artists that are very different from what is normal for me (like Ani DiFranco and Jack Johnson) that I can't listen to unless I'm in the mood.

I have entirely too many bands that I like but here are a few:

Pink Floyd - Everything they have ever done
Alice Cooper - Everything up to and including Special Forces
Gary Numan - Old stuff is classic and new stuff is amazing
Laibach
U2 - Everything up to and including POP, I did buy the Complete U2 however
Fred Eaglesmith - Alt Country, Milly's Cafe - an excellent disk start to finish
Bob Dylan - Got the Complete Dylan Collection from iTunes
Johnny Cash - Discovered his music after hearing his Highway Patrolman version
Black Sabbath - Dio years were my favs but I have all the disks up to the last
Godflesh - Unusual band that I got to see live once back in the 90s

Of all the bands above that I got to see live besides Godflesh (who opened for Skinny Puppy) were:

Pink Floyd - 2 times - A Momentary Lapse and Division Bell Tours
Gary Numan - 2 times in the 2000s
U2 - 4 times
Black Sabbath - 2 times during the Dio years, once with Ian Gillan as singer

i saw him @cuesta two years ago for the "mysterious production of eggs tour" with nickle creek, and last year in MN at the MN zoo. This guy is unbelievable. he plays like 4 instrumints, Loops them, and sings and wistles over it. TALENT.

there are just so many bands i love, it's hard to quantify who i like best. here are just ten bands in no particular order along with my favorite album from each band:

1. u2 - the joshua tree
2. oasis - (what's the story) morning glory?
3. weezer - blue album
4. the smashing pumpkins - mellon collie and the infinite sadness
5. hole - live through this
6. no doubt - the beacon street collection
7. radiohead - the bends
8. death cab for cutie - transatlanticism
9. modest mouse - this is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about
10. bloc party - silent alarm

if you couldn't tell, i'm a big fan of the mid 90s. a lot of those albums shaped the way i listen to music. but again, there are a lot more bands i absolutely adore. and i haven't even named any individual artists! maybe another post....

Listen to some Spock's Beard and Kevin Gilbert. Both are available on iTunes. Kevin Gilbert's best album isn't, but it can be had here. (http://popplusone.com/shaming.html) It's one of the greatest albums ever made, IMO.

I recommend Spock's Beard's "The Light" as a good starting point with them. It was their first album and IMO, it's their best work.

I started out listening to Dream Theater, then heard about Spock's Beard on the DT forums, I believe, then ended up hearing about Kevin Gilbert, who is one of the greatest talents in music ever, IMO. Read up on him and check out "The Shaming Of The True." If you're into prog, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Man, I am sampling a bit of their stuff now on iTunes and I can already hear a bit of Spock's Beard influence, especially the bass guitar. Excellent. Gonna have to buy one of their albums. Which album do you recommend as a good starting point?

okay, my fav. band is actually a solo artist with a sweet band.

Lord Toph -Check out his music at www.myspace.com/lordtoph

he's the most original thing i have heard in rock in many years. of course i love other bands like Type O Negative, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, CombiChrist, Crisis, Otep, Kittie and others, but Lord Toph is what's hot now! Everything about his music is original, the sound, the lyrics, the vocals, the guitars, the drums, the themes, the pictures, you get the picture!!

All awesome bands. Queen are my favorite band BY FAR. I just got heavily into them in December '07 after always loving "Bohemian Rhapsody" and after buying "A Night At The Opera" on iTunes, I was, and still am, HOOKED!

And yeah, "Octavarium" is the one of my favorite DT albums. Some great stuff on there. I seen them when they were on "Gigantour" with Megadeth and they blew all the other bands, including Megadeth, off the stage. It was amazing. One of the coolest experiences of my life. That was on August 30th, 2005, so they were touring in support of Octavarium.

My favorite album of theirs has gotta be Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence, though. Amazing stuff. :)

Bohemian Rhapsody is like the number-two requested song on the radio of all time (so I heard anyway). May I ask how you came to like this one so much? I've tried to 'get' the song but it just seems so chaotic, like it doesn't flow or something.. I dunno...

If I had to pick one at this exact moment it'd be Delays, they're fabulous.
Though I'm not usually a fan, the new Colplay album is also quality.

I just dig it.

I dunno, it's totally my thing. I'm a big fan of progressive rock, with which you see a lot of epic songs with lots of changes in tempo, style, etc. I just love everything about it.

You a Queen fan that doesn't like Bohemian Rhapsody?

Right now, though, I've been listening to more "Don't Stop Me Now" than "Bohemian Rhapsody."
