Turn firewire cd burner into dvd burner?

Hi, I've got a Lacie firewire cd burner. To me it just looks like a case with a standard cd burner built in. Would it be possible to replace the cd burner with a dvd burner? I have a snow imac 500mhz with 640mb running panther.

take it apart and check?

It may not work though if you had to install drivers for the LaCie.
