Yeah, I'll definitely be seeing it tomorrow evening... I'm not a Robert Rodriguez fan (Spy Kids? gak!), but I do like Frank Miller, and the movie seems like a good "thought experiment" (i.e., "can we do this?") in the same vein as Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (both of which I really liked).

And guest director Quintin Tarantino!!! You know this movie is going to be awesome. The dialogue is almost word for word from the comics!

not really familiar with the comics, but I am really pumped about the movie, based on the trailers and ads I've seen for it, and also who is in it. I cannot wait :D

I got to see a sneak preview of it Wednesday night. Wow! It totally rocks. I like the Marv character. By far the most bad-azz character to ever grace the silver screen. Robert Rodriguez is my favorite director and I must say, he has definately risen the bar. Not a single weakness in the movie in my opinion.
I take that back, kinda. I have doubts as to wether it is main-stream enough to make the oodles and oodles of money it deserves. Its made of three different stories (shorts almost) that dont really have anything to do with each other except for the fact that they all take place in Sin City. They are interwoven somewhat in that there are characters from one story in another story, but not having to do with the same story line (hope that made sense).
BEST RODRIGUEZ MOVIE EVER! You must see it.

Oh. And usually when I hear people talk of how violent a movie is, I dont really pay any attention. But ummm, Sin City is crazy, wacky violent (so friggen sweet). It wallows in its violence. Fortunately, its a very stylized violence. For instance, when a character get his hand blown off, he bleeds white.
Fair amount of nudity, too. Although, not sensual nudity. Nudity as in half naked women walking around with guns. But I digress...
Ahhhh. Beautiful combination. :D

Anything that has been touched by Tarantino turns to gold...a peculiar kind of gold, but gold nonetheless.

scem0You need to check out Ebert's review (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050331/REVIEWS/50322001) in the Chicago Sun-Times... he gives it 4 out of 4 stars.
And all due respect to Jessica Alba, Brittany Murphy, Rosario Dawson, Jamie King, Devon Aoki, et al... but Carla Gugino is definitely the hottest actress I've seen in a movie in a LONG time. She's the oldest of the lot, and curvy, but... wow, I think I should just stop right there.

One thing I'm trying to figure out is how Nick Hartnett's character fit into the movie. His character is listed on IMDB as being "The Salesman." Am I missing something?

Tarantino directed one scene. The one with Del Toro and Owen in the car. I don't think it was him who thought about the violence, that was all from Frank Miller's comics.

I saw it last night and was blown away. I have never seen a comicbook movie quite like this (felt like a comicbook). Benicio Del Toro and Mickey Rourke gave an awsome performance.

saw this twice, once last night on a DLP and tonight on a film projector
this film is just a visual delight from start to finish. and while carla gugino was hot and nearly naked, i think jessica alba with her clothes on (and the lasso :D) was the hottest in the movie hands down. a lot of the movie reminded me of those old gatorade commercials where ppl bleed and sweat colors...i wonder if rodriguez hired any of those ppl for this movie? another thing ive been wondering was how this movie got an R rating...i think it was borderline nc-17. there was some guy with a young kid in front of me tonight who was covering his kids eyes during the nudity but not during the violence???!!? WTF besides distracting me from the movie thats pretty f*cked up to do that to ur young kid. even if he doesnt have nightmares then hes being desensitied to violence at a young age. the kid made some gun noises like *boom* at the beginning of the movie
but back to the movie i predict this'll be my fave of the year. best action movie ive seen in theater since kill bill. bruce willis seems to be perpetually typecast as the underdog. madsen's performance was pretty flat. i really enjoyed the rosario dawson and clive owen segment a lot. Mickey Rourke played the badass thug perfectly. the cheesy voice-over really helped to give it that comic-book feel. this director's highest grossing movie is spy kids-- glad to see him push the limits of film noir. doesnt seem that genres got a whole lot of attention lately. i hope theres not a sequel and bad copycats of this movie
oh yeah the preist guy was frank miller
here's a review from James Berardinelli (http://movie-reviews.colossus.net/movies/s/sin_city.html) one of my fav reviewers

It loses its pace sometimes, but I think that's because its so fast that normal pace seem slow.
Overall a good movie.

The opening scene in the movie was the very first thing they shot for Sin City. Frank Miller wasnt sure he wanted to let his "baby" be made into a movie, so Rodriguez had him come down to his Texas studios and shoot that scene just as a test. Its amazing that he was able to get such a big name to sign up for a test, but Hartnet was up for it. Needless to say, Miller was impressed and agreed to go ahead with the movie. The scene turned out so well, Rodriguez left it in as an intro to Sin City.
I'm not sure, however if the scene is actually based on any of the Miller books or not.

Yeah, the beginning and ending scenes confused the heck out of me. But a VERY good movie technically. I was amazed at some of the stuff they did. I like the Bruce Willis Storyline the best of them, but the Marv character was pretty sweet how he didn't die.

The first scene was also to set up Josh Harnett as an assassin. Then at the end, the whores hire him to kill Becky.

By "one scene", does that mean Tarantino directed one of the 3 parts, or did he literally direct one scene in the movie?

Sorry, dont remember either characters name.Yeah, it was the scene with Dwight (Clive Owen) and Jack Rafferty (Benicio Del Toro) talking in the front seat of Dwight's car... and yes, Jack's been turned into a Pez dispenser by that point, so the conversation is all in Dwight's head.

In all fairness, when she's naked you don't see much. However, that first scene where she's topless....wow! It's worth seeing again in the theater just for that scene.
And when Rosasio Dawson is dressed like that, she can order me to do whatever she wants. :D
And like everyone else says, it's visually stunning, a treat to watch, and maybe the most violent movie I've ever seen. I too wonder how in the hell it didn't get an NC-17. Not complaining, just wondering.

For some reason, if the blood isn't red, it's not as bothersome to the MPAA ratings committee.

Just got out of it a little over an hour ago.
Wow. I am impressed. I've never read any of the Sin City stories from start to finish, but I skimmed through one recently as Borders was featuring them (obviously because of the impending release of the movie) and I did read the first storyline (with Bruce Willis) through to the point where he's shot (the first time before the next storyline changes in the film. I was quite surpised to have it be the beginning of the film (save the opening). I recognised lots of the shots being mirror images of their graphic novel counterparts.
I had to get used to how much the movie emulated the book. You become acutely aware how physical violence is almost parodied and bodily damage metrics exagerated in graphic novels when you see them acted out in real life.
That and the nudity. But things seem to calm down a bit after the first half hour. The way blood came out white phosphorescent in the gory scenes really as a great artistic move. Making it red on the black and white film would have been interesting but kinda played-out-feeling had they gone with that.
I just bring this up when you mention the fact the color was taken out for ratings reasons. Now that I think about it, I wonder if the choice of white (especially a BRIGHT white) was entirely on purpose. Having things glow like that highlights them in the film ("Hey, ratings board! Look at all the blood in this movie!") and at the same time seems to be a statement of sorts. There was just an irony to making blood from all the violence in this film white, the color of purity, and at the same time a blinding - even heavenly - light, which contrasts nicely to the story's characters, particularly clergymen, involved in all the depravity of Sin City.
