View Full Version : A most bizarre/surreal experience
Mr. Anderson
Apr 2, 2005, 11:18 PM
I took a little self guided tour of an abandoned factory in my home town today and found a little more than I expected.
Click4Pics (http://www.gone3d.com/SurrealWarsaw) shot 04.02.05 around sunset
NEW Click4Pics (http://www.gone3d.com/SurrealWarsaw2) shot on 04.03.05 ad midday
Any thoughts? What does it all mean - the cupie pin head, the vampire clan, the runes, etc?
Should I worry about going back? Its such a cool place for pics, I'd just not want to be there when the others might be around.....

Walking in the door from the courtyard below (door way in pic 6) I was greeted by this....hanging at the bottom of a flight of stairs to the rooms above.Looks like a warning to trespassing photographers. Or maybe that's the last guy who went there!

Apr 2, 2005, 11:24 PM
oh, and one more thing...after I had finished and was walking just out side the main factory floor by the road looking at my pics a car screeched to a stop 50 yards behind me...they watched me continue walking a bit then passed me and parked on the other side of the road until I got back in my car. Then they left.
Weirdness....

Cool pictures, thanks for sharing. What town was this in?
The stuff you came across is rather creepy and odd. I'd guess it was done by some teenage goths kids or some gang, unlikely to be anything truly disturbing... but you never know. ;)

I would've run my a*s out of there. :p
Clearly this was a religious act. You can tell this by the blessing of ashes on the doll's head. Notice a cross on forehead? Satanists, carnies, goths, or some ADHD kid, maybe. Regardless, it's a sign from a person who is not happy, maybe that's why the place is abandoned.
Mr. Anderson
Apr 3, 2005, 12:05 AM
I don't think this is why its abandoned, I think these people used the place because it was empty.
I did find 3 bags of stuff, clothes and a blanket by the stairs to the basement - one or more homeless probably live there or use the place sometimes. I doubt its the same people who did the weird stuff.

Ha, well, it was still light out and I didn't hear anyone. Although the wind was blowing at 20 to 30 mph today, so it was whistling through the buildings and making things clank. Very eerie at times.
When I go back, I'll bring someone, I think. Even if its just to make sure when I'm climbing around I don't fall through a rotted plank and hurt myself...

I'm sure if I went right now (its 1:05 AM here) those things would come in quite handy.....
I'll stick to daylight for now - and I'm going to bring my tripod next time, which might be tomorrow - and get some longer interior exposures. I just wish I had a wide angle lens......

I'll find out tomorrow what the plant use to be....I'm thinking it was a factory that supplied parts for the auto industry - many such plants are all over Northern Indiana.
And now that I think of it, there is another abandoned building one town over. I'll have to go check that one out as well and see if there are any more of these signs there as well.

you have a good eye. Are you a serious photographer? I would LOVE to go out there and bring my 4x5 view camera loaded with TMax 100 holders. This kind of architecture must be photographed in large format 4x5. It is beautiful.
As for all of you making "creepiness" or "scary" comments about it: please: obviously poseur midwestern teenagers have been using it to hang out for years.
A very good find... it reminds me of Fort Snelling in Minneapolis.

Exactly. I'm more scared of the floor caving in with me on it then anything else when I do these kind of shoots. Looks like a pretty nice find mr. a. Nice, big, fairly solid looking building. But yea, probably some over-imaginitive teens.
There was an abandoned mental ward up here, called Torrance, that had its share of pentagrams and the like-- was mostly frat boys doing hazing stuff as we found out one night. But still.
Very cool building, cool pics, and that kewpie head! That was a lil' intense! You gotta go back there during a sunrise-- the light on the second floor was spectacular-- would lend to some awesome and eerie b/w's! Or color with that golden color tone.
My hands down favorite shot from the bunch though:

Glad you all like the pics :D
Moxie, that's one of my favorites too, but the upstairs with the golden glow is quite nice....when I go back with my tripod I'll retake that one since all of these were done with out tripod and at f2.8, which isn't as sharp as f6 or f8 which I think I'd prefer here.
Dawn is also going to be cool, but I'm going to wait a few weeks for that so that its a little warmer in the morning. Its still high 30s low 40s at 7 AM...

the ladder shot is very nice; good shots mr A. :)
didn't the vampire clan start as a D&D style role playing game? i had some friends in college that used to play this vampire game ... it would take place at all times; they would assume the characters in their daily lives and hide it from the 'humans' (day-walkers ... 'Blade', 'Underworld' etc.) fighting their battle amongst us; err ... playing a game through class. i think some kids just get out of hand sometimes.
i've had a strong urge/association with vampires for quite sometime. i can see how a kid could get lost in it ...

In someways not as good as the first, definitely the lighting at sunset made for more interesting shots in some cases. But there were a bunch of things that would have been much harder to do in low light.
Dawn has huge potential, and I'm going back when it gets a little warmer.

Nice photography, Mr. Anderson.
It's obvious that it was once a thriving kewpie doll factory. Probably where eyelikeart took the photo he showed us here. And, speaking of creepy, anybody need a new avatar?
This is wild stuff. Having been to Warsaw many times myself, I'd be interested in where this is located. I've only been in "mainstream" Warsaw, so have not seen this building. The "decor" doesn't fit in with my limited perception of the Warsaw personality.
I thought Warsaw was primarily driven by two major industries - printing and prosthetics. I hadn't heard of the automobile manufacturing tie-in before, but I guess it makes sense.

You've been to Warsaw? Wow....many times....why?
Its just on the Warsaw side of the East West railroad going through town, right down the street from the main entrance to Winona Lake and the shops there....farther west down the tracks is the larger factory that's still in production that builds engine blocks I think....
D
You've been to Warsaw? Wow....many times....why?Yes...about 20...shouldn't everyone visit Warsaw? ;)
Really, though, I work for a company that has a branch in Warsaw.
Actually, I was last there about 2 weeks ago, and before that (lucky me) on Valentine's Day. We ate at the Boat House that night, right on Winona Lake. Nice place.

The Boat House is just OK - the best restaurant in town is Noa Noa - and its up to par with any good restaurant in Chicago, New York or DC. A very strange thing to find in such a small town. You might need to make reservations, but I'd recommend going if you haven't already been.

Hahahaha - you mean the Ramada or Holiday Inn Express isn't good enough!
We had to spend a week in the Ramada when we moved here last year....bleh....we had the suite with the mini kitchen, but it was me, my wife, 6 month old and a dog....not sure I want to do that again.
Have you tried and B&Bs here? Don't know if they'd be any better, though. And the Ramada has that other house next to the Wagon Wheel theater which is a little better.
D
I'm not generally there for more than a night or two, so lodging isn't too unbearable (generally go for the Hampton since I get my HHonors points). I didn't even realize there were bed and breakfasts in Warsaw. I suppose it makes sense, and perhaps I'll investigate. As long as they are "modern" ones where you aren't sharing bathrooms  I've been to those before. No thanks!
I'll have to make it a point to do a little more roaming next time I'm down there, which is looking like the end of April.

Wow, well done! Those were amazing pictures. The place has a creepy feel indeed. I agree that it's most likely obnoxious teens defacing it though - I have a feeling the "type" of people that are truly dangerous in those bizarre ways would not be so obvious about it. You KNOW there are squatters there (and the basement looked really spooky, you must have balls of steel)

I put the ladder there..., it was an old roofers ladder, still had tar on it, but I need a way to explore the upper level - there weren't any stairs on the inside. And the ladder was a little old, so I didn't go up the first time with my camera, just in case. Unfortunately, the best shot was of the ladder....

However as for the location!!!! WOAAAA!!! That place seems pretty damn freaky to me. I wonder if anyone has ever played a thriller game called Black Dahlia? The factory looks so much like this game it is unreal check out this screenshot.

Excuse the lack of size....but as you can see there are crazy runes and drawings on the walls....if i could get a better picture of the room then you would see that there is loads more of these crazy drawings
Ill try to find more screen shots of this place in the game because the similarity is so spooky
