View Full Version : how hot do the PM's G5 cpu's get

I'm just curious I've got this new Dual 2.5Ghz PM recently and under 3-6% load basically idling the cpu's hover around 145-147F or about 63-64C and go up from there... is this normal?

I haven’t had any problems with it glitching or crashing or anything so I assume the cpu's are both well within Apples tolerances for the G5 cpu's but the cpu's from what I've seen can get up to ~165F which for a CPU seems awfully hot and there are 2 CPU's.

I guess it makes sense as to why IBM can’t easily produce a 3Ghz G5 cpu but I'm just wondering what everyone else sees temp wise.

ARS - what if our Dual 2.5s REALLY ARE running too hot?? (http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/ubb.x/a/tpc/f/8300945231/m/651002306631/p/1)

Well... this is a very good thread topic. I had a little difficulty finding information on temperature ranges on the G5 processors. I did run across a similar site as posted above which confirmed the temperature ranges posted on the site. The newer G5 PPC 970fx runs much hotter than the PPC 970. The top range of the 970 is the low range of the 970fx. I have the dual 1.8 970fx which idles at 60 - 65 degrees C. Under load I reach the mid 70's. (I've seen it hit 80 degrees C).

My PowerMac G5 1.8 has never hit more than 53C

In winter.. i opened the side and put it on my windsill ... the CPU got down to 8C :p I let it warm up slowly after that not to inflict damage.

A little something on the design of the G5 daughter card, from IBM....

My 2x970FX @ 2.5 GHz runs at around 85C under full load. As stated, the FX has a much higher temp threshold than the original 970. No problems here.

Edit: Meant to add that I Fold 24x7, so I'm 100% load on both CPUs *all* the time. I've run this way since day one, which was mid-September last.
