Downloading Lion to USB drive to boot from

I have read where some recommend downloading Lion to a USB drive to boot from. My question is, is it necessary if we want to reinstall Lion or do a repair disc, or does Lion have an easier method of accomplishing either one of these tasks.

If you need to reinstall Lion, I believe it creates a second partition allowing you to reinstall..

If you need to clean install then Apple recommend installing Snow leopard first, then upgrading to Lion. However you can also burn Lion to a DVD or USB flash drive to clean install Lion.

Personally, i'm using a flash drive.
