New to mac os x and i know i can use the system + f key when in finder to bring up the search box

I would like to be able to access the quick search from anywhere in the OS. I tried system + f when in programs like safari and it doesnt work.

E.g. on my current laptop running ubuntu they used the windows key to bring up the search box and i can access the search box regardless of the program i am in.... start typing and get the results.

Can i do this in os x / Lion, when i get my MBA next week?

Thank you

Or just command+space if you don't want to open a new window.

I miss the old Spotlight window.
