Value wise the PowerBook wins by far. The PowerBook hardware is more reliable than any other portable computer on the market today. Apple has a history of least repairs compared to any other computer company. Also PowerBooks are some of the lightest computers too so it is very easy to take it from place A to place B. Also you will get a better operating system. For a computer company Apple also has the best technical support on the planet. I am a recent switcher (its been just over 2 years) and I can tell you if you buy a computer it better be from Apple.

I went through 2 Sony laptops before I got an iBook because both of them had problems my second one had major hardware problems.

Honestly, I would get the Sony right now. The PB is getting older and older every day. That sony has some great technology (better processor, faster FSB, faster RAM, faster video card, etc.).

no matter how good the sony is, its still using that crappy OS and prone to the thousands of viruses out there.

Why the Sony is better:
-As thin as the Powerbook
-Faster Processor
-Slightly better GFX card

What is better about the Powerbook:
-Better Battery life 4.5hrs vs. 3
-Faster dvd writing speeds 8X Vs 4X
-Tiger versus XP

I haven't used the Centrino chips but i know they are faster than the G4's and will be faster than the G4 1.5 at certain apps. If you like Tiger and Panther then go for Pbook, if you are ok with Xp go for Sony

While the G6200TC is slightly better than the FX5200, don't expect to do much gaming on ether graphics cards.

powerbook wins, In my own opinon.

this is because:
macs have longer lifespans (iv read some people are (still) running panther on a G3 mac  , try putting xp on an old pc  )

i will be swithcing on the 18th of april 2005 (only if tiger arrives and a new rev of powerbook, if not ill wait for the next revision of the powerbooks + tiger  )

another question of topic:
is it possible to hook up two monitors to a powerbook (with 128mb vram)?

PS: the sony laptop has a better screen, serious its got higher contrast etc everthing just looks soooo defined (but it runs xp, which isnt soo defined :p )

btw, i am a ccna and mcse - neither are paper based.. i just forgot how much i like to turn on my computer and go when i am at home.. and WORK on them at ya know.. WORK. - the only thing that concerns me now is that the g4 is on its' last legs.

Everything about the Sony is better, especially that widescreen 13" and graphics card. Its much faster overall as well.

Problem is WinXP. I don't love it. However, I don't have the hatred for it everyone else seems to have. Its not that bad if you run anti-virus software that automatically gets rid of viruses for you. You won't even know you're getting them, and they don't affect usability.

But I do love OSX. Its just that at this moment, that may not be enough for me not to SERIOUSLY consider the Sony.

Indeed. I'm happily running Panther on a G3 (600) iBook, and my mum, bless her, runs it on a G3 (350) PowerMac.

Yes, and you can have both displays showing different stuff (aka 'spanning'). Furthermore, all PowerBooks can run in clamshell mode (ie, with the screen/lid closed) when connected to an external monitor. You only need the basic VRAM to do this too. Anything more than 16MB will work, although more will make for smoother visual effects of course.

iBooks can also span if you install a (safe and removable) hack, but they are not designed to be run in clamshell mode

dude, a ccna is totally paper based. the ccie is only half paper based. get that and you will be so jaded you will hate all things networked.

Myself, I'd get the sony. OSX is sweet and all, but you don't need to run windows on it, grab yourself some linux goodness. then, all you lack is expose, drop shadows and um, thats about it.

Course, I have both (PC and mac)

hmmm, as a SUSE user, i have considered using linux on the sony, but that laptop is built fo windows :S (Sony have supplied thier own software for it, making everything easy to use (burning, making movies, etc)

after thinking long and hard, i wont be getting the sony, this is because i need somthing new, a virus free (and spyware i.e. .cab files  ) SP2 does nothing bu trun your pc in to an obese operating environment. even my norton (system works 2004) causes slow downs

powerbook it is then
