iPod photo: 30GB or 40GB? (upgrading from 15GB)

A year ago, I bought a wonderful 15GB iPod, and now it's full. Which is fine, except that I still have 40+CDs to import, plus a gig or two still on my old iMac, plus $40 of iTunes credit.

All that extra music, plus a baby on the way in May (we'll be taking lots of pictures), and I figure it's time to upgrade.

I'm afraid I'll outgrow 30GB, but I can't really afford 60GB. I started poking around online and found some of the discontinued 40GB models for the same price as the 30GB via Apple.

So is there any disadvantage to buying the 40GB over the 30GB? Right now, it looks like I get 33% more space, plus all the goodies, for the same price.

Were there any major changes (especially battery-wise) that were made in the 30GB that weren't in the 40GB?

Apple claims to have bumped up the battery life to 15 hours in the 30GB model (compared, I believe, to 10 in the 40GB version). So there you go.

The orginal iPod Photos had a 15 hour battery life.

Always go for the biggest you can afford.

I have a 40GB iPod and am very happy with it.

i have the 40gb photo and the battery lasts a while id say around 8 hours with decent use of the click wheel, however this will decrease obviously with a backlit screen or with playing games....on one train ride it lasted about 4 and a half hours of playing solitaire and music the ENTIRE time :)

The 40GB is noticeably thicker than the new 30GB (as it uses a dual platter drive like the 60GB). The 30GB is very marginally thicker than the 20GB.

The 40 GB iPod Photo comes with a heap of accesories which don't come with the 30 GB.

Thickness really isn't a concern, so that's good. My top three criteri are:
-capacity
-price
-battery life

And from the sound of things, the only real difference is in capacity. (and the accessories with the 40GB are certainly a bonus)

If I can find a good home at the right price for my 15GB, it looks like I'll be seeking out a 40GB before too long.

For me when i bought my 30 gig ipod, i really didn't care about the size of it, i cared more about the size of the HD.
I compared my 30gig to the new ipod photo 30 gig and it is smaller and lighter compared side by side, but when i first picked it up, i didn't notice a difference.
If i were getting a new ipod, i would get the 40 gig, it comes with a dock and i think a case....
and get apple care, the battey on my 30 is gone it gets about an hr. and a half. And i don't feel like getting a new battery, because i want a new ipod photo :p
