My set up consists of a MACBOOK PRO 2011 with a toslink cable connected to a Panasonic home 5.1 stereo system.

It works perfectly, the sound is great but the only thing I don't like is that i cant control the volume the volume control is disabled when the toslink cable is plugged in.

Is there software or something that i would be able to control volume in OSX when the toslink cable is plugged in and using my speakers which are 4 meters away

This is not possible unfortunately. It's up to your receiver to deal with volume when using the optical output. It's just the way it works.

EDIT : Spoke to soon. Maybe this workaround can help.

No its not the way it works

I have been running a Toslink to the DAC to the amp for a year no problem with volume control keys or slider.

Then I install a new drive and start over with Lion, and with wire out is fine, with Toslink out no controls...

What gives?
