New Apple Screens In Oct? Or a very nice alternative

Hey everyone, I'm personally really looking forward to APple releasing some new widescreen LCD's in Oct after their current promotion ends.

BUT!... if they don't, for all of you that really do want that widescreen, here's a very very viable alternative you might wanna look into :D

The Sony's maximum resolution seems kind of low (1280 x 768). The 17in iMac screen is 1440 x 900. I've never been a fan of monitors with attached speakers. They always seem so cheap. The Component video input is a nice addition though.

Those formac monitors are sweet and that's not a bad price. I'd take a pair of those over a 23 any day. And I might when I get my new machine next year, they'll probably be under 1400 by then.

Formac gallery 2010 supports a true resolution of 1,600 by 1,200, which is comparable to the virtual workspace of a 23” CRT. It is available with an ADC or DVI interface.

that is worth it, true 1600x1200 (x2) Whoo Hoo! I'm sold.....maybe if I get that new Radion 9000 for my G4 450, I'll get 1 of these now to replace my 21" Apple CRT....

Just what kind of work requires 2 Formac 2010's? That would be a friggin' WALL of LCD feedback!

I suppose digital video editors could use the space, as well as audio engineers working with tons of tracks and plug-ins. But SHEESH!! That's a LOT of real estate! For HD editing an ideal set-up might be one Apple 23" and one of these Formacs--the Formac for editing and the 23" for full-screen proper aspect ratio playback. WHOA...!

lots off apps work better with 2 screens as your workspace - speaking from expereince this includes photoshop and any 3d program like lightwave for instance which is window hell!

Yeah, LightWave sucks with fitting itself inside the screen, but what can you do?

By the way, did you try out Wings 3D? I know I've been pushing this program really hard on these boards, but I believe so strongly in it!

The Totoku-made IBM LCD monitor in the above posts has a list price of $9,000 US. For that price you could buy TWO big Formac 2010s AND an Apple 23"--and still have enough left over for a brand new Dual 867mhz tower and the extra video support for the monitors. Heck, if you go with just one Formac 2010 and one Cinema HD 23", you could almost get a 1.25 dualie AND FCP3 (academic) for $9,000.

And 3840 x 2400? Wouldn't that render you hopelessly eyestrained after a while? What is that equivalent to in per inch pixel density? It might be useful in slick presentations in boardrooms or used occasionally by CAD engineers to delve into the guts of a drawing, but for the average 8-10 hrs/day graphic designer or video editor it would be eyewateringly painful to use unless you dumb it down to a lower resolution--then what's the point of owning one?

Still, progress is always good, and anything that lights a fire under the folks in Cupertino is great by me.

One of the things that's great about so many pixels, as is the case with the Totoku display, is that you can halve that amount, and have a BEAUTIFUL display. The Totoku display could show 1920 x 1200 wonderfully, and the Formac display could run 800 x 600 (a display rarely used these days) perfectly.

If only this pixel doubling was done at the software level instead of at the hardware level... the quality would be astounding.
