Is there a way to tell the iPhone camera that it is bright in the background? I'd like to adjust the "backlight" but don't know how. Yes, I've tried touching the screen where I want to focus and set the lighting but it does not help a lot.

He wants to adjust the exposure before the shot. Sorry can't be done. It's a fully automatic p&s camera. Your best bet is adjustment after the shot in an image processing app like camera+ etc. Maybe in the iPhone 5?? 😀

Adjusting the exposure isn't really a high end setting (it's been on other camera phones for years), it's just a setting that Apple haven't included. Its something they could probably easily add via a software update but for whatever reason haven't chosen to do so so far.
I have to agree with that. It would be so easy to add exposure compensation to the camera feature. With the live preview you could fine tune the image before the shot. Very simple and would really improve backlit images. 🙂

Not true. You are able to adjust the focus and exposure. I'm not sure exactly what the OP wants to do, but if it is to say, reduce the bright sky behind his subject, then I would click on the sky to see how for down the exposure goes and see if his subject is now a dark blob. I can usually find something inbetween to click on and set the exposure where I want it.
