I have a choice to make. Should I get....

Dual 867 with 768MB Ram
Combo Drive
15" Studio

OR

iMac 17"
768MB of Ram

We are going to run office, iApps, etc. Also, AutoCad in Vitrual PC.

Let me hear it. Money is not a factor, but I want this thing to last a while. It has to be between these. Are the PowerMacs really that loud?

If the imac has a superdrive, I'd get it.

Otherwise, the powermac with its duel processors has to be better.

What will you be using most often? Will you be working significantly with video or audio? If so, what do you plan to be doing? Do you need the extra res. of the 17 inch wide iMac? How often will you be using VPC? Do you plan to use OS 9 at all? If so, how often? Is upgradability a big issue for you?

I really want a superdrive, so if it was me, that would be a deciding factor. Since it isn't me, I voted for the duel 867,

Well....I'll let the money thing go for now!

I would say go with the PowerMac. If the lack of a Superdrive is an problem, add it! If you want it to last a while, the tower will be more upgradeable with cards, processors, and the such versus the iMac. This might save you a good bit of money in the near future as you can upgrade rather than replace.

On the other hand, if you plan on getting a system configured and staying with it (limited OS or version updates and no radical new hardware) the iMac might be just fine.

maybe the dual processors will help with autocad, but i would ask someone who uses it all the time and find out if autocad uses altivec and is aided by the presence of a second processor

the dual 867 is expandable and if you are one who wants to keep a machine for more than two or three years, then get the tower

superdrive is great according to a lot of people, but how many people actually need to burn dvd's?

i am leaning towards the tower if that is your two choices
