windows no longer show # of files in folder?

On top of removing the scroll bars, it also appears that Apple removed the bar at the bottom of each window that shows how many files are in each folder. Is there a way to turn this back on? This is a feature I use on a daily basis.

hit Command+/ or go to view and "Show Status Bar"
 
Do you know if it's also possible to set New Window's default to something other than All My Files? I'd like it to default to Desktop.

Is there a manual somewhere for Lion where I can learn about these new features?
 
The only thing I don't like is how it unselects the drive from the left hand column when you go into a folder. I have a movie folder on two different drives and when I am in them both (which I am often) it is hard to tell which is which. 😛

You can turn on the Path Bar (View -> Show Path Bar) which should help you differentiate

Go to Finder > Preferences and then select the location under "New Finder window show:"
