I bought an iMac late last month and I would like to claim my free copy of Lion before the deadline. However, I'd like to wait awhile before upgrading to Lion. I'm happy with Snow Leopard and I have a few Rosetta apps that I'd like to find replacements for before I make the leap. If I download Lion, does it automatically begin installing? Is it possible to download it now and install it later?

no, to install, after finishing the download, click the installer located in /Applications/

Just quit the installer when it pops up. No need to upgrade after the download.

The Lion download will be in your Library/Application Support/App Store (or somewhere thereabouts).
