Verizon today announced (http://news.vzw.com/news/2011/07/pr2011-07-22.html) its financial results for the second quarter of 2011, and in a slideshow presentation (PDF) (http://www22.verizon.com/investor/investor-consump/groups/financial/documents/investorrelation/2011_q2_pre_col.pdf) accompanying the release revealed that it activated 2.3 million iPhones during the quarter. The period marked the carrier's first full quarter of availability for the iPhone, and it compares to the 2.2 million iPhones (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/04/21/verizon-activates-2-2-million-iphones-in-q1-2011/) activated during the launch quarter.

Verizon's 2.3 million activations compares to AT&T's 3.6 million (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/07/21/att-iphone-activations-flat-quarter-to-quarter-at-3-6-million/) announced yesterday, although AT&T's numbers include reactivations of previously-sold iPhones on new accounts. Verizon is obviously seeing little if any of that activity given that an iPhone compatible with its network has only been available for five months. AT&T also offers an 8 GB iPhone 3GS model priced at $49, an offering that Verizon is unable to match due to Apple not having built a CDMA version of the iPhone 3GS.

I'd say pretty good numbers considering the iPhone is over a year old and competing with 4G phones. The iPhone with 4G LTE can't arrive soon enough!!

The claims that Verizon hasn't grabbed much of AT&T's iPhone marketshare were exaggerated.

If you limited the comparison to the iPhone 4 then Verizon's activations would compare even better.

I'd say pretty good numbers considering the iPhone is over a year old and competing with 4G phones. The iPhone with 4G LTE can't arrive soon enough!!

If current 4G chipsets would require the iPhone to be bigger, and if 4G sucks away battery life, and if I canít even get 4G in the places I go... then Iíll definitely want to wait for 4G to get better. Non-bulky, power-efficient, and better coverage, please! (Yes, you can turn it off... but I still donít want my iPhone to be as bulky as other phones, for the sake of a marketing bullet point that doesnít do much for me.)

And yet I do agree, that day canít come soon enough! Iím not in the market for an iPhone now, so my fingers are crossed that the necessary generation of 4G chips will be ready for me a year from now.

In any case, usability, camera quality, and app selection matter more to me than 4G vs. 3G. iOS 5 is what has me excited.

what gets me is how many LTE devices were sold considering how much they costed (250+) and were on fairly limited device.

Add to it LTE was only offered in select cities so motivation was well limited.

Lastly LTE devices were battery drainers. It will be nice when LTE tech gets to 2nd or 3rd gen and battery life gets better.

It means nothing

When the next iPhone is released

And IF they are released on all available carriers at the same time..

Well, those are the numbers to quote and a real test

Great. Now if my Verizon iPhone would just quit sucking I'd be really happy. I ended up having to switch because I moved to a town where the AT&T network is spotty at best, and even before we moved away from DC I found the Verizon slower and more cumbersome than the AT&T version. And, oh by the way, since there is/was no iOS 4.3 for Verizon I couldn't restore my phone from a backup when I made the switch. PITA.

It wont be till the next iPhone equal launch that we will be able to truly compare the numbers.

Although knowing that verizon now has the iPhone is so pleasant, I live where ATT's systems can't support its users, but verizon can do all that and more :D
