Before I upgraded to Lion, to change spaces i used Ctrl + Right/Left Arrow.

Are spaces now called Desktop's in Lion?

When I change using the ctrl + direction arrows, the icons i have on my desktop are not displayed immediately and fade in / appear?

Is this new, or can i change an option?

Found a video on Youtube showing the problem:

I have the same thing, but I don't know whether it is a bug or just a weird decision. It's not the biggest issue in the world, but it sure looks strange.

And yes, spaces are now called desktops.

This is done by design. Technically, the Finder itself is an app that runs in all spaces. Try assigning any other app to multiple spaces by right clicking a dock icon and selecting Options -> Assign to: All desktops. Each time you switch spaces, the app has to reload the window into the new space after a brief delay. Finder is an multi-space app itself, so there you go.

Note: Incase you're interested why the menubar and dock don't reload, its because they aren't operating on the same level as the Finder. They have the ability to constantly overlap whatever content you're viewing, even if you switch between spaces and fullscreen apps. Hence, no need to reload.
