Best external HD for my PB?

Im looking to buy an external HD for my 12" PB G4 (1.33, 768 mb ram, 60 GB HD) to use it for mp3s, photos and movies. I would like to know which brand, model is the best for my PB G4...Money is not the issue. I need your opinions, advises and help choosing the best for me...Thanks in advance! :)

You can save a few bucks by buying the drive and case separately. But you say money is not an issue, so I'd say go with LaCie. They make good stuff and their d2 line is very stylish and well built, with the light-up blue power button and all-metal case.

i'd get a g-raid personally, it looks cool, and its a raid set up, so that if one hard disk fails the other one still has all you photos ,mp3's etc on it...

its pretty small and portable too, and its available in 320gb to 800gb so it'll more than meet your needs

buy a hitachi travelstar 7k60. swap out your 4200rpm harddrive with the hitachi. buy a bus powered 2.5" enclosure.

I'm very happy with my LaCie (d2?) - with one usb 2, one firewire 600 and two firewire 800 ports. It's been pretty useful to have those different options when working with other people. It's quite a bit more heavy than their porche-models, but definately seem more solid (very solid in fact) and I'm not carrying it around that much - prefer to have my backups safe in my home.

I've heard very bad things about maxtor-one-touch or what it is they call them. Apparently 33% of them break down within 2 months.

anyway the LaCie drives are very good (I have a D2 80GB, my brother has a D2 120GB and a friend has 2xD2 250GB & 1x 1TB & 1x Portable 'porsche' LaCie 80GB and we're all happy with them ;))

I am using the following:

Works very well. I also have the FW400 version, and it also works well.

What I really like is the construction of the above case, very solid and looks great.

I have a 300GB Maxtor II at home and a 250GB Lacie Triple at work.

All said, I like the Lacie better. It sits and behaves itself quite nicely.

The Maxtor is always spinning up whenever it feels the need, which Maxtor has said is normal.

I call it annoying. The backup software that comes with the Lacie is a bit easier to use, but not as robust as Retrospect...

Get a Lacie. :)

I love my 160gb LaCie Porsche drive, its pretty quiet, its not huge and it will match your powerbook quite nicely :D

i have no REAL problems with my Lacie Porsche 250, other than the fact it is USB 2.0. I have FW800 on my Powerbook and I am kicking myself for not getting just a large harddrive and a FW800 enclosure...

I have a Maxtor 120GB External HD, i have never had a problem with it, it connects to my powerbook via USB

My LaCie 250Gig is at a sweet price point per GB and works a treat. You may not need the tripple interface since you dont have FW800

I just got home from Apple Store...I got the FreeLite 100 GB one...It's very lite and small...I like it so far...Anyone had any experience with these before?

I think LaCie d2 Triple is an excellent external HD. Very sturdy (case is metal), quiet operations, triple interface (Firewire 400, 800, and USB2), good reviews by other users. I use the external HD for my iTune files and copying DVD movies (mac the ripper to HD, burn wth Popcorn from there).

Sorry for an unrelated question but is USB 2 fast enough for me to install games on my external and run them through USB 2 eith no noticable lag.

i doubt you'll need any software for your powerbook, however you may need som edrivers for your pc. i bought a portable lacie drive ages ago when i had a pc. I seem to remember I needed to install drivers for the usb ports to detect it i think... but your powerbook shuold work ok.

Email medea and find out. if it needs drivers it should come with them on a cd anyway...
