Hey all,

I recently purchased a baseline Mac Mini that I will be using in my home theater. However, I'd like to check the capabilities of the hardware before I start installing and configuring the system (I know I should have done this before I purchased the computer but I made a semi-impulse decision). If I'm interested in the results, I'm sure there are other people on this forum would be interested as well.

I figured this video would be a good benchmark test. I'm specifically looking to see how many dropped frames the the Mini has with the linked video. The best way to check for the dropped frames that I'm aware of is with VLC. While the video is running in VLC, hit Command + I and check under the statistics tab.

When I get back home I'll post the results of an out of the box baseline Mac Mini. If anyone would be willing to post the results of a 2.3 Ghz Mini with upgraded RAM, the 2.5 Ghz with the AMD video card or the quad core server version, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Results from a 2009 Mac Pro 2.66 Quad-Core Xeon with 8gb RAM, stock GT120 and intel 320 SSD for comparison. Results compared to new mini: ouch!

For more comparison, 2ghz 2009 Mac mini (10.6.8 though):

It's also BS since it seemed to drop a lot more and didn't display right at all, with corruption all over the place. QTX w/Perian was the only one to actually play it right, but that doesn't have a "playing FPS" display. QT7 has one (showed mostly in the 15-20fps* range)...but corrupted all over the place too.

*I'd guess QTX's playback was in this range too, maybe a bit higher but not consistently full framerate.

The info screen from VLC means nothing. It could be that VLC itself causes the lost buffers and frames and your graphics card hasn't anything to do with it. When i play an avi from example Weeds (the regular rip 240 MB, not 720 p) or another tv show: True blood, White collar, etc (also not HD quality) i have some lost buffers and frames too. Do you really think that my iMac 2,93 GHz - 4GB ram - Ati 4850 HD 512 MB can't play such a file without losing frames and buffers? I blame the software and not the hardware.
