When I try to open iPhoto, i gives me the message to make sure this app is compatible with this version of Mac OSX. and to update the app. There is no update available for it. Can I re-download for free from the mac app store, or will i have to revert to snow leopard and then back to lion?

Which version of iPhoto do you have? I think iPhoto 11 comes with Lion...but I'm not sure. It comes with the new MBAs. Mine works fine, but I bought it in the app store when it first opened.

Should be iPhoto 11. I just bought the new MBP in march.

iPhoto 09 version 8.1.2 works fine in Lion.

Just realized my garageband will not work either. It says there is no instrument library.

That is a strange message. I have successfully used iPhoto 09, and 11 (both pre- and post-update). No errors or messages of any sort.

A virus perhaps? Corrupted library?

The new Macs come with an App Store registered copy of iLife 11. If yours is the same way, you may be able to redownload from the App Store by holding the option key while clicking the install button.

Are you sure you are running the iLife 11 apps and not an earlier version? Maybe you restored or copied them from an older computer?

It isn't a virus....

More than likely it is due to a failing Lion install. OP, have you rebooted yet to see if that clears it? Also, you can fix the permissions on the drive to see if that helps as well. If not, reinstall iLife as clearly there is something wrong.

How would I reinstall iLife?

Did you get a copy when you bought your machine? I believe it is disk 2 on the install disks.
