Why is my private folder enormous after one week with MacBook Air?

All of a sudden, my SSD drive is up to 30gbs.

13g of it is in a file called "Private"

What is in this private folder and what can i do about reducing it?

I've put almost nothing in my SSD, but i have been trying to get my Mail started without it downloading 15 thousand gmail messages, which i have been unsuccessful at.
