Back in the day, we only had one game on our phones. A game we played for endless hours, trying to beat the high score that our 'friend' had saved when he borrowed our phone for 5 minutes that one time. That game, of course, was Snake; and it was ubiquitous in the late 90's because just about everyone had a phone from Nokia.

Now, with the advent of the iPhone, we have thousands and thousands of games to play. But, forget all this newfangled stuff like the app store and NBA JAM. Something is missing.

Because everyone likes a throwback (http://www.dewthrowbackshack.com/), we now have Snake '97 -- an awesome game that replicates that old-school Nokia gaming experience.

The game, which comes in both free (http://appshopper.com/games/snake-97-free) and 99 cent (http://appshopper.com/games/snake-97) versions, emulates an old Nokia phone on your new iPhone -- complete with fantastic original sound effects and "awesome" features like a high score that can't be reset, just like the original!

In the game description, the developer, Willem, describes where the game came from:
The story behind this game was that my iPhone got damaged, requiring me to revert back to an old phone. Suddenly I knew the iPhone was missing something and the idea for a accurate Snake remake was born.

This app was created as an homage to the original Snake programmed in 1997 by Taneli Armanto.

By carefully analyzing the original gameplay, timing and controls, this Snake '97 remake is one of the most accurate available. The free version (http://appshopper.com/games/snake-97-free) is limited to 200 points while the 99 cent version (http://appshopper.com/games/snake-97) includes a number of different game modes and difficulty levels.

Haha how I remember playing that game on my old Nokia. However it is not something I will be playing again.

You don't "revert back."

You just "revert." To revert already implies the act of switching back to something.

Angry Birds is so yesterday compared to this. Snake never dies.

Downloading now. Will be a great time killer on my daily train journey. The classics are always the best.

High score of 28 140 :( Guess I need some more practice!

This version does an excellent job of making up for the fact that we can no longer enjoy the original!!

I have spent hours on this game once again!! Although the iPhone has so many games available you just cannot beat what works the best!! Just wish I could have the clicking of the buttons to finish off the experience!!

I agree. This game has showed me how important tactile feedback is.

When is someone going to make a decent hardware numpad for the iPhone? Games like this need a real numpad. One that clicks and creaks. Or better yet—soft and rubbery and mushy! Paint that wears off so you can’t tell the keys apart is optional.

I grabbed this game a couple weeks ago, despite never having played the Nokia version. It’s just too funny :)

Yes its an accurate remake.

But it sucks due to lack of physical buttons, like most iphone games that arent angry birds.

Not the same feeling without physical buttons, really. It was a cool game, and I was surprised by the line 'just about everyone had a Nokia cellphone' because it is so true. After that Motorola decided to raise the bar a bit

Yesterday my mom said with great enthusiasm, "look what my new iPhone 4 can do!" Handing me her iPhone with solitare booted up. She insisted I play a game which I did, and lost, then a second one because I have an ego. I lost. Then I realized I was playing solitare on my mom's iPhone. I set it down as quickly as I could!

Hey did anyone ever remake Atari Biplane?

This old skewl stuff is funny if for no other reason than it is simply cool "you can do that". Even if I never play Snake for the first time ever, I might buy the 99 cent version just to support someone with good intentions.

This is not news.
Macrumors FTF.

I've had versions of Snake--and yes, even Snake on top of a psuedo-Nokia cell UI--on my iPod touch/iPhone for a few years now. I may even have paid $.99 for one at some point.

Granted, this may be a "better" version somehow, but hardly merits a story. just buy a banner ad on macrumors... jeesh.

I'm still sailing on that boat too. I have paid 20€ within the last year for mobile coverage. Let's fight the machine.

Wow I remember having that exact phone on the left... and I also remember how extatic I was when I upgraded to a model that had a color screen with interchangable face plates and downloadable polyphonic ringtones--I had a mario brothers one and was the coolest high school sophomore to actually have a cell phone before the teachers caught on and 'banned' us from having them in class :-)

Cool app, and very addicting 8-). I like the fact that you have to use the numeric buttons to control the snake. Just like old times
I bought a similar app for my android as well (snake 1997)

LOL I remember the good old memories. 6110 and 3210.

Then Snake II came along on my 8310 and 6210.
