Can someone confirm an iPhoto bug for me?
Select some photos in your library, go to share-> Export, click the quicktime tab, make sure "Add currently selected music" is checked, and clicked on export.
The movie doesn't have any music. Even after I select a song in the normal slideshow feature in iTunes, and go back to the library and do an export, no music.
Of course I can just create a new slideshow, go to share, but it ends up being too large with all the transitions...
Why can't I export a normal slideshow like iTunes 4 with music? :(

iPhoto still needs the ability to share albums across users on the same computer.
When in doubt use OSX? Quit iPhoto, and drag your iPhoto library to the shared folder in HD>users.
Go to Get Info and change the permissions for access (underneath Group) to read and write, and change permissions on access under Others to read and write as well.
Go back to the iPhoto library folder and create an alias to put back in your own Pictures folder.
Log into the next user account and create an alias of the iPhoto library folder in Shared and put it in the users home>pictures folder. Change their current iPhoto library name by adding a 1 or something, and job jobbed.
I would advise logging out of both accounts and log back in, as until I did that performance was a bit grim.
Not exactly the click of a button, but it works fine

Ooh... I take "Placing titles over DV content" to mean that Apple has fixed the tremendously annoying bug that would screw up the interlacing on any clips you applied something to if the first thing you did after opening the project was apply a title.
The workaround, applying a transition or effect before doing any titles, borders on bizzare, so I'll be really glad if this does indeed fix this issue.
I'll be tryin' it tonight!

It's not very intuitive, but you have to click the play button, select a song, then do the Export, etc for it to work. Just selecting the photos without first hitting the play button for the slideshow (so you can re-select a song) always makes my slideshows come up without audio as well (even though I have previously selected a song). Hope this helps.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think you're referring to making a slideshow by hitting the slideshow button. I have gotten that to work fine, and it exports with music fine.
The problem I'm having is highlighting photos and choosing to export them as a quicktime movie with music (not in slideshow mode).
Doing the above doesn't have any transitions and makes the quicktime movie very small, it also lets you scale up the movie super large.

You're right, just choosing export will not have the audio attached, but I was referring to is you can "force" the audio to work if you just hit the play button to "reselect" the audio (without actually going into slideshow feature), then I get my slideshow to show up with the audio, it must be a bug, but that is the work around I found that works for me.

In the lower left corner of the program next to the PLUS (+) is the right arrow button (>) (play button), hit that button, select your song, you don't necessarily have to preview your slideshow, but you can if you want to, then go to export.. quicktime, etc. You will then get your pictures in a slideshow in Quicktime in the smaller size you want (as you're right doing it in Slideshow itself creates HUGE files). I do this frequently for emails. I think this will work for you.

Well hopefully this fixes the issue when I try to burn dvd's I have created between iMovie and iDVD. It sucks up all my rescources for about 40 mins to render a 6 min DVD with menus and everything and then when it goes to burn it always tells me it had an error during track initialization and that I have to delete all encoded assets and retry. Its only worked once and the movie stopped working after a min and a half POS. If anyone knows if i'm just doing something else wrong feel free to let me know

probably been said, but iphoto 5's still too buggy to rely on for any photo editing. it's also just very slow no matter what system I use it on. I like the some of the organizational aspects of it, and it's great for just keeping pics in order, but it's in real need of a X.1 update. I'm sure it's in order.. this is Apple we're talking about. :o

I have been using my isight with the 1.0.2 update and have not had any problems at all. I updated today but I see no real improvement/performance difference. I am wondering exactly what is different about the 1.0.3 update? the description from Apple about the update is vague as usual. It mentions Audio Improvements. Well.....I never really had any audio probs before the update.Whats the Dealee-O ?

I must be the only one who thinks the slideshow/other organizational changes in iPhoto 5 make perfect sense :)
If it wasn't for GarageBand, iPhoto 5 would be my favorite iLife app. Either of the two is worth the price of the bundle. (And so are iMovie and iDVD, probably, but I don't really use those much.)
PS, iPhoto 5 supports my camera's AVI format movies! :)

I don't find iPhoto to be that bad either. But there are two things that just annoy me(besides a couple of other things that I think Apple could do better with iPhoto):
1. You cannot search for albums or folders. Once you have a lot a gets tedious if you only know the album name but not the picture name.
2. You cannot sort by size or resolution. These two sorting options I am missing now for almost a year since I got my mac. These would make my life so much easier.
Anyway, I hope iPhoto 6 will be THE update that makes everyone happy. So far iPhoto 5 was a nice but rather minor update imho, considering it took them a year to do it and that half the new functions don't work properly.

I quite like iPhoto 05 - I use it more than iPhoto 04 and find the editing etc tools much faster to use than opening it in Elements to make a minor fix and sending it back again. It's never crashed on me either (touch wood).
Those two features would be good - I don't need to search for folders quite so much since we could have subfolders. I've started using keywords more which is helping me.
I'm assuming that the second option will come with Spotlight. It does mention being able to search on files which were taken with a specific camera so searching on resolution or size should be a piece of cake. ;)

That is a MUST!!!! and it would be nice to be able to share within user local network via rendovous (sorry: Bonjour!) like Itunes does...
In this way i would buy a Mac mini...justo for Audio and Photo Streaming....
This is easily done with a 3rd party app called iPhoto Buddy (http://nofences.net/iphotoBuddy/). I use it, and it does nothing more than let you work with multiple iPhoto libraries.
The basic idea is this: you put your iPhoto Library in /Users/Shared, then use iPhoto Buddy to point iPhoto in each user account to the new location of the iPhoto Library that iPhoto will use with it starts up.

I bet 10.3.9 is to be released very soon-but why would Apple list 10.3.9 on the page , if it's not been made public yet?
Option #1 - I have a hunch 10.3.9 is coming today via update (Friday 4-15-05). Either that or Option #2 - Apple is getting real lazy and doesnt want to revisit the iSight info webpage once they actually do release 10.3.9 update. Or....... or........ Option #3 - they just plain screwed up. I go with option #1 :)

First. Make sure your iSight is pluggged in. than go to the Apple menu > About this Mac. > More Info button > Select "FireWire" from the contents list. Locate the iSight Camera and it should tell you the revision that you have installed and active. It should be 1.0.3. If it is not, than it didnt work or maybe you are using OS 10.3.6. The iSight 1.0.3 update needs 10.3.7+ another thing, It is worthless to do the update if the iSight is not actally plugged in.

It does mention being able to search on files which were taken with a specific camera so searching on resolution or size should be a piece of cake. ;)
I guess I should start using keywords, I have just never gotten around to use them. I hope thats a possibility with Spotlight, it would really help finding and sorting things. I guess I'll start with the keywords.

Nope... but will definitely investigate it! Thanks

If anyone knows if i'm just doing something else wrong feel free to let me know
I had another problem (it's been a while ago, so I'm not sure it's the same problem) which I was able to workaround.
iMovie 5 no longer breaks clips into 2 GByte chunks. So, if you're picking an iDVD theme and then dragging and dropping the movie onto the menu, it won't render/burn correctly because the movie is too long.
If this is what's happening, try splitting the track first (you just need a cut, you don't need to make any other alterations to the movie).
Hope this works for you...

I went to my brother's house (he's the one with a miniDV camcorder) so he could try iMovie and iDVD, and the first thing he notices is this weird, crappy bug. I sure hope that's what they fixed.
There's also a similar bug with iPhoto slideshows (transitions between photos, like cross-fading).

In your SWU:
...
iMovie 5.0.2
iMovie HD 5.0.2 Update addresses issues related to video and audio synchronization for DV projects and other issues. These include:
Audio in PAL widescreen
Sharing (exporting) HDV to videocamera tape
Synchronizing with HDV 720p content
Importing video from a DV videocamera when using analog passthrough or recording live video
Compatibility with some analog-to-digital converter boxes
Capturing video with Hi-8 (Digital 8) devices
Placing titles over DV content
Playing iPhoto slideshows that include protected content
Opening iMovie 4 projects that use speed-adjusted clips.
This fix to iMovie fixed problems I had moving to iMovie 5 with my Formac video converter. When I movied to iMovie 5, I could no longer import video directly into iMovie. That's fixed now. Thanks Apple!

The keywords in iPhoto are quite useless. I mean, you have to have a LIST and then you use checkboxes for the keywords?! How stupid is that!
iTunes already has something better, i.e. "grouping". You can type anything you want, and it auto-completes with the current bank of keywords you've used so far (so there's no mistakes possible).
iPhoto really needs to work the same way for "keywords" as iTunes does for "grouping". :(

iPhoto still needs the ability to share albums across users on the same computer.
It has this ability. You just need to do a bit of file management to make it work. The trick is to move the Pictures folder to the Users -> Shared folder while iPhoto is not running. Then make aliases back to each user's home folder of the Pictures folder, and renaming the alias Pictures
iPhoto will still end up reading from the same library.

"It is worthless to do the update if the iSight is not actally plugged in." Seeing as how this is a "Firmware Update", obviously the software is for the camera, not the Mac.
Initially the iSight was plugged into a FW passthru on an external HDD. This morning I retried with the camera plugged into the front panel of my G5. Same results.
Could some of you that ran the updater check your logfiles, where I specified in my post on page three of this thread, and see if is is indeed normal for this updater to end with "error 000000", or at least a common occurrence.
Thanks

I guess I should start using keywords, I have just never gotten around to use them. I hope thats a possibility with Spotlight, it would really help finding and sorting things. I guess I'll start with the keywords. Unfortunately none of the iPhoto metadata (keywords, etc) is searchable with Spotlight. iPhoto stores that stuff in its own database and not in the image files. Spotlight (as of now) has no way to query the iPhoto database. I was really hoping that this update would address this, but it has not. What's worse is that the Preview app in Tiger CAN and does handle keywords, and adds them to the file. I was sure that that was a clue that they'd update iPhoto to do the same, but apparently not (or not this time at least). I suppose it's possible that iPhoto will work differently under Tiger than 10.3, but that seems unlikely. Oh well, we'll find out in two weeks I guess.
Cheers,
John

I hate to be repetitive, but I highly recommend you check out Keyword Assistant if you haven't already. It's just a textbox that stays hidden until you hit cmd-opt-k, and then you start typing and it auto-completes from your current bank of keywords.

DId you try a back port? I have heard that the front port can be flaky.
Nobody has really addressed the system requirement change brought about by this update. 1.02 required 10.2.8 or higher, 1.03 requires 10.3.8 or higher. If anybody shares their iSight between multiple Macs, and any are at 10.3.7 or below, this update will render the iSight unusable on that machine unless the system is brought up to specs. Also, probaly a dangerous update if your main Mac is at 10.2.8 and you don't want to upgrade (for $129) to Panther, you shouldn't run the upgrade (but I guess it wouldn't show up in SWU)

Darn... perhaps I'll slow down on the adding of them. That does seem odd though that they're not using it. Perhaps in iPhoto 5.1?
I assumed it was covered since in the Spotlight demo on the website, you could see keywords associated with the images. Does Spotlight display them in the results but not actually use them to search on?

Spotlight uses all of the metadata that's stored inside the actual image files, including keywords. The problem is iPhoto doesn't store it's metadata (including keywords) in the files, it stores it in its own database. The latest update doesn't change that unfortunately. If you were to use Photoshop, or Preview (in Tiger) and add in some keywords or other data to the file, then Spotlight will find those images just fine. The problem is with iPhoto, not Spotlight.

If you get any kernel panics, you may have a hardware issue causing these freezes:
http://www.macmaps.com/kernelpanic.html
A 20 second freeze is not normal. The other thing that can cause this is an overfull hard drive or a directory which needs repair:

I have never had a kernal Panic and this happened with both idvd 4 and idvd 5. I have run fsck and that and i have 100Gb free on the hard disk.
It only happens the first time i start up idvd and try to change the theme, after the first freeze of 20 seconds (it is consistent) theme's change normally. I am going to check out that directory thingy now, thanks.
I have also only ever had to force restart my iMac once so i think the directory is fine, all my other apps work just fine it is just idvd 5 that freezes everything for about 15-20secs.

It seems that only iMovie HD has new features. The rest are patches.
The iMovie HD update is also a patch. It restores features that were in previous versions of iMovie (versions 3 and 4) but which were mysteriously absent (or didn't function properly) in 5 and 5.0.1.
I didn't know this is possible... isn't that with some sort of external a/v box?
All Digital8 camcorders can play back video8 and Hi-8 tapes AND convert them from analog to digital so that a DV signal goes out their FireWire port. Many miniDV camcorders also operate as analog to digital pass-throughs.
These was a reference to "Capturing video with Hi-8 (Digital 8) devices". I still have ilife 4. Was there a problem in that as well? I have some digital 8 tapes that I need to import and am wondering if there is a problem with imovie 4?
There is no problem with iMovie 4, but iMovie 5 and 5.0.1 had trouble with Hi-8 capture from Digital8 camcorders.
I can Imagine. I have 7000 photos and a Imac G5 with 1 Giga of ram and it nearly unusable...I really canīt imagine what is like in a G3....iPhoto 5 still sucks wind, but yay. I can use type 1 fonts in my albums now.

As with many other people who have posted, my iPhoto is extremely slow. I have a 9,000 photo library. I see the 30 second freezes, and loooong wait times to start up and shut down. The problem is the amount of memory iPhoto is using. I only have about 850MB RAM free on my machine for programs to use, and iPhoto uses as much as 2GB on a bad day. At the moment it is using 800MB and a ton of swap on my machine. Once a program hits swap, it means that it is using the hard drive as memory (where a hard drive is more than 1000x slower than DRAM).
Can anyone else verify the memory usage they're seeing from iPhoto? Apple has completely ignored me on this bug (which I started reporting the day iLife 05 was released).

If you were to use Photoshop, or Preview (in Tiger) and add in some keywords or other data to the file, then Spotlight will find those images just fine. The problem is with iPhoto, not Spotlight.
For the three of you who care...A little bird told me that Tiger does indeed index iPhoto metadata with the new version. But it doesn't write that data to the file, so there must be some kind of importer or something that reads the iPhoto database. In any case it's the same effect.
