As the title suggests, my brother's first gen MBA bit the dust. Well he's getting the grey screen. He took it to the Apple Store and they say he needs a new HDD. He said he read where others are having this problem and I told him I'd swing by and take a look at it.

My question is this: is it possible for me to restore his MBA using the flash drive I got with my new (2011) MBA? I should note that he threw his box, documentation, USB restore, etc. out. And if I am able, would he lose anything on his current HDD?

I don’t want to start a new topic, so figured I’d post this in here.

Ok, I was able to make the MBA work by using an external HDD as the startup disc. The MBA does recognize the internal 128 GB SSD drive in the MBA, but I’m unable to retrieve any information from it. Is there any good recovery software out there or is anything/everything on this disc pretty much gone forever?
