I purchased my MBP a couple of years ago, probably in the 2009-10 period. Is it a waste to upgrade to lion? Will I not be able to use all the functionality?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the basic question

Go to a site like roaringapps.com and see if the applications you use most are being upgraded to Lion. We can't answer the question for you with the information given.

As for the system itself, you probably can use most of what it offers. If you intend on continuing to use the Mac OS you're probably gonna wind up with Lion someday anyway; in my experience it's less painful to upgrade along the way than freeze yourself in the past.

I have both a current 2011 MBP and an older late 2009 MBP.

The 2009 runs Lion great! Better than it ran Snow Leopard, it has the trackpad and can support all the gestures.

I personally believe it'll run fine. :)
