Play Portal 2. Now! Seriously, stop reading this and go play Portal 2.

(Playing Portal 1 first is recommended if you want to know the story better, but you don't have to play it first)

Left4Dead 2
Half Life 2 (absolute classic. Anyone that calls themselves a gamer must have completed this)
Bioshock (very weird, but a brilliant game)

Lol...maybe I'm not smart enough....but I can't undesrtand what one should do in Portal. I've tried a few times, but that game is a mistery to me...

-Neverwinter Nights 2 was a good game but they failed to import the expansions so I wouldn't reccomend it.

-Jade empire was a good one. old, but good.

-Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic is one of my favorite RPG's of all time I would highly reccomend it.

-Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2. Both very good, though the second one not so much

-Half-life 2 one of the greatest

-If your into strategy I would go with Rome total war or Starcraft 2

any non violent games for kids under 7?

The 'Lego' games ported by Feral. Lego Batman, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter. They are a LOT of fun for anyone, I'm quite a "hardcore" gamer, and I love them. They are definitely suitable for kids too. Check them out here (they are also available for download on the Mac App Store).

As long as I can make the classics run (natively or emulation), I'm good.

For me, the Golden Age of gaming lasted from about 1985 to around 2001 or so, with the real meat of the era being in the late 80s to early 90s.

I'll make an exception for Morrowind in 2002 because with mods and all it was really able to draw me in. But by then it was pretty much over for me and "new" games. Big on graphics, short on story.

These were the real gems of those days (and they still stand the test of time):

Maniac Mansion (1987)
Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders (1988)
Defender of the Crown (1986)
F-19 Stealth (1989)
F-14 Tomcat (1988)
Pirates! (1987)
Pirates! GOLD (1993)
Civilization I (1991)
Civilization II (1996)
(I'm not sure how to feel about CIV III and IV. Too graphicky, but they do work.)
Rise of the Dragon (1991)
Fallout (1997)
Fallout 2 (1998)
Escape Velocity: Nova (2002)

(Although I think the Total War series is quite brilliant, let's be fair, though I've only played Shogun and Rome.)

Interesting to note that these were the days when the game manuals (maps, extras and all) were almost as important and central to one's enjoyment of the games as the games themselves. I recall the Pirates! manual increased my interest in the game and entire historical period a hundredfold. Games of this era left so much to the imagination. I miss that.

I think games really lost it for me when they tried to mirror our visual and spatial reality by going (or attempting to go) 3D.

I don't play games on OSX, but on Bootcamp I run TF2 and L4D1 the most. They're playable on OSX so I guess they count for something!

If you're looking for a good game for kids around 7, I recommend Lego Universe. It's an MMO like WOW, but tailored for kids and has very high protection. I love it because it has simple lego action, exploration, and creativity because you collect lego pieces as you play and can actually build with them in a separate build mode. And it's narrated by Sir Patrick Stewart - what's not to love about that?

I'm not sure if you meant you, Morrowind, or new games are more graphics than story. I personally think Morrowind was great on both. Another game that's amazing on both graphics and story line is Metal Gear Solid.

If you want to play Morrowind with the amazing looks and physics of Oblivion, might want to check out "Morroblivion (http://www.morroblivion.com)." I have Morroblivion running on my Mac side via Cider, it's awesome!

I have a late 2010 13" MBP and a 27" ACD.

Gaming with this combo is to barrow a quote "Insanely great!".

Games I play on my MBP are:

Halo: Combat Evolved
Fable: The Lost Chapters
World Of Warcraft (very seldom though)
Bioshock
Prey
Doom 3
Curse Of Monkey Island (via ScummVM)
War Pinball HD
Pinball HD
Call Of Duty 4
Strongbad's Cool Game for Attractive People (five episode series)
Back to the Future (five episode series)
Warcraft III and TFT expansion

I have a couple more sitting in the closet as I need a decent gamepad to get the most out of them which are

Need For Speed Carbon
GTA Trilogy (Box set of GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas)

I love gaming on my Mac! :o

Heh, I totally forgot that from buying the PS3 copy that I had a free code to redeem Portal 2 for the PC/Mac.

Downloaded it yesterday and got completely roped in and noticed how much more detail I can see on my ACD coupled with my MBP vs. my PS3 and 1080p Sony Bravia.

The hard part for me is learning mouse and keyboard or when I flop back in my Lazy Boy recliner and play on the big screen, how much was scaled back for the sake of smooth gameplay on the console versions.

Thats me too, I really do not rely on the MacOS for gaming, although I do play Half Life (great series) and Portal on occasion under the MacOS and I used to play WoW. For the OP, my wife plays a LOT of Mac native hidden object games along with Spore on her 2007 MacBook. Many of the other games mentioned in this thread like Left 4 Dead and Bioshock, I play on Xbox...

I rely 100 % on OS X for gaming, and it works perfectly for the gaming I do (Steam: L4D2, CS:Source, CIV V, Portal 2 and so on). When I bought my iMac I feared I had to go the bootcamp-way - needless to say, I never installed windows and probably never will. IMO, OS X with steam has come a long way when it comes to gaming.

Sorry to drag this post up from the past, but I really want to get Rome total war, I currently have a macbook pro running osx 10.6 and saw that people on this thread have rated it in their top 10 for 10.6, however on the mac app store and on feral's website they say the minimum requirements are 10.7.5? So will this run on 10.6.8 or will I have to upgrade?

Would also welcome any suggestions for other age of empires or total war type games for mac. Especially after age of empires 3 for mac is anyone has a copy they don't use anymore?

cheers.
