Congrats on the purchase, i've been after a D70 for about 6 months now, but I cant afford it.
However Nikon UK are going to release the D50 and a slightly upgraded D70 at the end of the month. The D50 is like a cut down/cheaper D70 (to compete with the new canon digi rebel whatever), but we'll have to wait and see how cut down it is
I'm not sure whats going to be included in the improved D70 (rumoured to be the D70S), but it'll be out of my price range anyway.
Well done on choosing Nikon over Canon.. a good choice in my biased opinion (yes i'm biased so dont flame me
)
The D70s seems to be mostly software oriented upgrades. I haven't seen anything about mpix, though it is possible they'll upgrade that. I saw a manual, and it still lists it as 6mp, possible that manual wasn't done, as it was placed online in error. The body and such is the same, and it has a 2.0" LCD replacing the 1.8" it had previously.
It adds the new color spaces that the D2x and D2hs have, and it has the same noise reduction features as the D2x. I'm thinking it's possible that the D70s could be around 8mp. Which makes sense to me as the D50 would be 6mp.
The D50 is very interesting to me. It'll be a MUCH smaller D70 lookalike, will still beat the old digital rebel feature-wise, and will be around $599 with an 18-55 3.5-5.6 lens. That's a great deal. It doesn't, curiously, have the front command dial, which would limit it to Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority or Program mode-- no fully automatic, which could be a big deal. Funny that they didn't scrimp on features, but it seems they scrimped with the modes. Then again, it's essentially a P&S with the ability to change lenses so... but at $599, undercutting the rebel by $100, it'll be hard to beat. And i'm sure the cheap kit lens will still outdo the rebel kits, given how much the 18-70 trounced the 18-55 canon kit lens.
Given some things i'm hearing lately about a D200, this kinda of product lineup would make sense:
D50. 6mp. Competes with DRebel MK I. 6mp.
$599 (n) v. $699 (c)
D70s. 8mp hopefully. Competes with DRebel mk II and new DRebel.
$1199 with 18-70 (n) v. $999 with mediocre kit lens (DRebel mk II)
OR
$1199 with 18-70 (n) v. $1599 with better kit lens (20D)
THEN
The D200. This is the product whose brochure didn't make it online. Nikon has said "5 new DSLRs in 2005". So far, we've had the D2x, the D2hs, and we know about the D50 and D70s. Why not make it golden three? They're doing the D200. It'll be out in June.
D200. 10mp d2x styled CMOS. 4.5 fps. F100 style body (think d70 merged with D2 series with slightly less rugged body). ISO 100-1600. HI-1 & 2 (3200 & 6400 equiv) 1/250 flash sync, with a new 18-90mm AF-S VR kit lens for $1799. I'd line up and down to buy one of these.
So basically, following Nikon releasing a superior cam to BOTH the 10d and DRebel (at the time) in the D70, Nikon gives us the D50 to fend off the DRebel mk I. The D70s to fend off the new Drebel and 20D, and the D200 to bridge the gap between the 20D and the 1d mk II.
I think given that most advanced amateurs who AREN'T pros want a fully-featured pro body with a higher-end build, Nikon would be smart to release this. And it seems they are.
Anyway, the moral of the story? There's no nikonrumors.com. So i'd wait a few weeks, until end of April to buy, as things could get VERY interesting in the DSLR world. Hell, if a D70s comes out at 8mp, It'll drop the 6mp D70's price down to around $700 with kit i'd think, which is a KILLER deal, consider I paid $1799 for my D100 2 years ago!
Oh. And DO NOT buy from amphoto.com. As said earlier, it's a brooklyn bait and switch
