great Cnet loves any chance to bash apple, no news here...
the record labels are being greedy, no news there....
so they want to charge more for the popular songs, well then they probably would plumet in sales, nothing wrong for the bargin discs though, and im sure that Jobs would love that, a bargin bin on the iTMS would be great, but he would probably only get that if the popular songs go up in price
why are the record companies mad? because they cant be overly greedy now, darn shame, let me shed a tear for poor music execs, the consumers have voted for the iTMS, so deal with it execs and work on gettin more quality music out there and you will make more money

I don't see this article as Apple bashing. I see it as exposing the greed and hypocricy that both the music and the wireless industries are based on.
"The (wireless) carriers' economics are aligned with us much better than Apple is aligned with us," said one senior executive at a major record label...
No kidding. The wireless carriers see customers as nothing more than sources of money that are to be sucked dry at the earliest opportunity. Just like the way record labels see their custoemrs (and the muscians they publish.) They're a match made in heaven. I wish these two groups of leeches would suck each other into bankrupcy, but that wonderful day probably won't come any time soon.
The music industry allowed Jobs to negotiate a sweet deal because they thought iTMS would flop just like all the other music download services. Now that it has proven to be the most successful, they're all upset, because had they known, they would've negotiated a much more abusive relationship.
But they're obviously not that upset. If they were, they could refuse to give Apple any new music. Their contract probably doesn't allow them to withdraw any songs currently being distributed, but they could refuse to give over any new material. But they know that, despite their greed, they are making good money off of iTMS, and they're not going to sacrifice that on the altar of pig-headed stupidity.
At least not today.

It would not surprise me if the record companies stab Apple in the back by taking away their catalogues and selling music in the DRM WMA format only. Blame the idea of 'being more compatible' by supporting whatever format Microsoft hypes.
As for mobile phone music, users will not buy 4GB of music if it costs US $2.5 or more per track. I can't wait to see what half-arsed compromise Motorola will make when they finally announce their 'iPhone.'
And one more thing: Apple has done a lot to legitimise the online music market. The format Apple pushes is one that users are happy with; that's why they bought 350 million DRM AAC files allready. The record companies may know a good band but they do not have a clue about formats. If they did, DVD-Audio, SACD, DAT and MiniDisc would not have flopped the way they did.

Here the music industry says, "You can have your KC and the sunshine band tracks for 99¢, but we want to charge you 2$ a track for the new Usher song." The music industry is mad because Apple won't let them jack up prices.
